At least 1,200 people died in the Peshtigo Fire, with some estimates more than twice that death toll. To explore some primary sources related to the Peshtigo Fire, check out the Great Lakes Fire History Digital Archive:

The fire completely destroyed the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, but burned from the outskirts of Green Bay north into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It occurred the same day as the Great Chicago Fire. While Chicago earned more press coverage due to the financial loss, Peshtigo was more deadly. (2/3)

October 8, 2026 marks the 155th anniversary of the worst fire disaster in recorded world history: the Peshtigo Fire. Peshtigo was the culmination of a terrible fire season that swept through much of the drought-stricken Great Plains through the Great Lakes. (1/3)

Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
A couple of years ago, as I was finishing my PhD, I aired some of my concerns about the environmental toll AI causes to a professor. They were (and likely still are) advocates of the tech. They had the audacity to say “Well, didn’t the invention of the printing press damage the environment?”

Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Hell, even for the sources that are digitized, AI cannot possibly formulate the thoughts and make the connections that a human brain can. For instance, I unexpectedly found a gem of a research lead in newspapers[dot]com this morning. There’s no way AI could have found it or pieced together a story.
000
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Oh, also: AI bases virtually all its “content” on the microscopically small amount of material that’s been digitized. Those materials that are digitally available reflects a historical bias made by well-funded orgs to prioritize certain things. A whole universe of documents haven’t been digitized.
120
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
All of this, of course, without mentioning how AI destroys the planet for the benefit of the billionaire class, is morally and ethically bankrupt, plagiarizes and steals original content (created by humans!), etc., etc., etc.
040
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Finally, people claim AI can get you 80% of the way. Ok, cool, well you’d still have to go back and verify that 80% to make sure it didn’t hallucinate or make up sources, and the still do the final 20%. It’s hardly a work-saver and instead creates new/more work to verify and put guardrails on.

Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
The eureka moment of making new historical connections—“wait, this is related to this thing I hadn’t thought about yet”—is one of the most enjoyable parts of being a historian. Why would I want a machine to make those connections for me? Or, as is almost certainly the case, not make them at all?
140
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
The unpredictable and unintentional nature of archival research can produce some of the best, most rewarding finds. It requires unique human thought to notice those scraps of evidence that you may not have been searching for, analyze them, and use them in a piece of historical writing.
150
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
I’m even a bit squeamish of hiring distance researchers, in part because their thoughts and what they notice in the archives will never be the same as my own. Much less a machine lacking years of historical training and the complex synaptic firings of a human brain.
130
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
But the struggling through thoughts about your research, about how to structure a paragraph, chapter, or book 𝒊𝒔 productive. All of that and more is necessary to learn.
140
Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
My thoughts on the AI discourse: the work of the historian is done through the friction of thinking. Countless hours of puzzling, questioning, and revising ideas. That’s how learning is done. The iterative process takes time, and oftentimes seems unproductive (no research or writing, just thought).

Like my NiCHE article, I began writing “Forest Fires” in mid-March during the fire outbreaks in northern MN and WI. We published it in the wake of the mid-July fires that devastated the border region. Unfortunately, without drastic political and economic action, such fires will likely only increase.

150 Minnesota settlers took up claims on the ceded reservation within two months of the Ho-Chunk removal. Meanwhile, hundreds of Ho-Chunk people died during their forced exodus to South Dakota.
