It's #ThrowBackThursday and this is one of my faves from my archives: a cyclist is caught by surprise by a young Red-Tailed Hawk flying alongside him in a park in NYC. At the time, these birds were very rare, but have since adapted well to surviving in the urban landscape. 🪶 #Raptors #NYC

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ABCD so here is an Anhinga, Boat-Tailed Grackle, Chuck-Will's-Widow, and a Dunlin. 😊🪶

A female Chuck-Will's Widow is blends in to the brown sticks and leaves covering the ground. Her extreme camouflage is her only defense as she broods her eggs. She resembles a dry dead leaf.

A Dunlin wades in shallow water looking for food along the shores of Tampa Bay. The shorebird has a grayish-brown back and wings, white belly, and black legs and bill.

This 12-Spotted Skimmer dragonfly has been through some things. I don't think I've ever seen wings this tattered. #dragonflies #insects

I met this little North American Racer while on a walk in a nature park in Florida. Cute little guy caught my attention as it quickly "snaked" around a pile of brush. 🐍 #reptiles #snakes

I've always wondered who looked at this bird and thought "Green Heron!" I see many colors, none of them green, LOL. A beautiful bird nonetheless. 💚🪶

A Green Heron creeps through some swampy water. It has a bluish-gray back and cap, yellow legs, and a reddish-purple upper body. So where is the green?

I felt like I was being watched and when I looked up, this guy was staring back at me. I love the bright orange eyes of juvenile Black-Crowned Night Herons. 🪶

Can raptors be borbs? The alternate #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Borbs and I think this Red-Shouldered Hawk fits the bill as it perches on a branch with its feathers floofed up. 🪶 #Raptors

Ta-da! Our local resident female Red-Tailed Hawk, Amelia, scores a 10 on her landing at the top of a tree. This tiny stick is one of her favorite perches. 🪶 #Raptors

This is the first time I've actually seen the yellow crowns of Eastern Kingbirds. On this day, they chased a juvenile Bald Eagle out of their nest tree, biting at its head and face as it flew. Poor guy was just looking for a place to perch! 🪶 #Raptors
