To Thrive Amongst Thorns is a collection of poetry which reflects my life as a queer, disabled, non-binary person. It holds space for important conversations about systemic issues while also recognizing that letting yourself experience joy in our current timeline is a radical act.

My goal for this book is to not only share space with my queer disabled community, it’s also to give folks an entry point to poetry and help them see that it can be a powerful and cathartic creative medium that can bring communities together.

The name To Thrive Amongst Thorns speaks to the difficulty of surviving in this world as a marginalized person while wishing desperately to be able to find a way to thrive and not just survive.

I would like to invite folks to experience poetry that is outside the norm. My first language, my first way of authentically expressing myself as an undiagnosed autistic kid, was poetry. It was a way I could connect with people, express my feelings and enjoy creativity. I want to share with people that poetry is and can be a rallying call and a powerful tool of building the change and love we want to see in the world. I hope that To Thrive Amongst Thorns helps readers find solidarity, joy and empathy with themselves in this art form, and encourages them to create things that bring them joy. And know, my queer disabled community, that you are not alone in this world.

Not my normal craft, but I went to a pottery taster class a few weeks ago, and these are the bowls I made! First attempt on the left, last attempt on the right. They're faaaar from perfect, but this was good fun and I love my little blue wobbly bowls!

They get progressively smoother!
