Day 18: The CocoaPods saga As far back as I can remember, #ReactNative’s iOS support has always been built around CocoaPods (maybe this wasn’t true for the very first releases). In all those years, its worked fairly well (minus the occasional bit of drama with Ruby/Gems).

Day 13: React Navigation Back in the early days of #ReactNative, there was a *lot* of competition in the navigation space (albeit mostly from Facebook with itself). There was NavigatorIOS, Navigator, then briefly NavigationExperimental. @expo.dev even tried their hand at it with ex-navigation too.

Day 11: Expo Router Expo Router is incredible; big props to @bacon.bsky.social for his work on it. If you’re coming from @nextjs.org to #ReactNative, it almost looks the same (if you squint), and there’s enough in the documentation to be productive almost immediately.

Day 10: Expo Config Plugins In my opinion, possibly the single greatest thing in the #ReactNative ecosystem, even better than New Architecture. Config plugins fix SO much pain, and go hand-in-hand with the prebuild process, together enabling what's called Continuous Native Generation (or CNG)

Day 8: Hermes, Yoga and Metro Back when #ReactNative was being built, Facebook needed foundational technologies that, at the time, did not exist (or were too young). Yoga, Metro, Yarn, Jest AND Docusaurus all came from Facebook that year, and it was a very cool year for open source.

Day 6: JavaScript interop in #ReactNative Interoperability with JavaScript libraries from npm can become a thorny issue, with some Web and Node.js APIs missing. Notably, this isn’t a React Native-specific issue, with groups like WinterCG defining baseline standards for JavaScript runtimes.

Day 5: Has unbundling been a success for React Native? Unbundling made sense (and still does), but I’m not convinced each module splitting out from the @react-native-community organization was the best idea. Each unbundled module has become its own fiefdom, typically tending towards neglect.

Day 4: Built-in vs. Community Modules Another stumbling block for users is what packages they should be using in the first place. The web is chock-full of recommendations, but its harder to find quantifiable pros/cons without having to do all the legwork yourself.

Day 3: Documentation Woes As we're about to go in to 2025, React Native's documentation is still rather terse. Having practical guides on performance considerations when using animations, <ScrollView /> and <FlatList />, <Text /> and <TextInput /> would save so many developers so much time.

Day 2: DevTools Support DevTools for React Native are solid now, but let's not forget the painful road we took to get here. Back in the earliest days, (before Hermes), RN used JavaScriptCore on iOS and whatever Android's internal JavaScript engine was at the time (vaguely remember it was NOT v8).
