After Muse Launch, U.S. Banks Are Saying Hell No to AI Agents Moving Money gizmodo.com/after-muse-launch-u-s-b…
gizmodo.com
Some U.S. banks are, thankfully, blocking their clients from letting Meta’s Muse AI bot root around in their accounts. Even more thankfully, it appears relatively few people have been dumb enough to try. Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Friday, Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster said the brokerage is actively blocking Muse from moving money because it poses unacceptable risks to the firm and its clients. “We don’t want someone just giving their password to Muse, and letting Muse come in and take action on that client’s behalf. We can’t control it, the client can’t control it, something could go wrong and who’s liable?” Wurster said. “For the protection of the client and for the protection of us, we’re not allowing it.” Wurster told Bloomberg that he personally receives data on AI agents that were detected and rejected on a weekly basis, and that this figure has yet to cross into the hundreds. Given that Muse collects entire dossiers of data on users and everyone they digitally interact with, potentially exposes users to exploitation, and has already had serious reported privacy issues like the time it handed out a home address to a stranger, this is probably for the best. Wurster said, “I get a report on how many times we’ve blocked clients from using one of these agents in a week and it’s in the tens and twenties—per week—that the big agents are being blocked. What that tells me is that while people love AI, they’re not willing to turn their financial accounts over to them just yet.” Earlier this week, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told investors on an earnings call that the bank bans AI agents based on risk: “We’re not going to allow just any… outside agent to come in inside the company, because it’s just too risky for clients and for JPMorgan.” For now, a spokesperson told CNBC, this means any external agent for retail clients. “You don’t want rogue agents, and it could be thousands of them,” Dimon added. According to Bloomberg, Wurster did encourage the use of Charley, Schwab’s in-house AI assistant unveiled last month—Charley will only handle administrative and informational tasks out of the gate, not trading. Wurster told Yahoo Finance AI could play a role in helping clients research stocks and set up trading processes, but allowing AI agents to make decisions without human approval is “a leap too far.” Wurster also told Bloomberg that Schwab is preparing to allow external LLM connections, but only through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers with controlled authentication, and their actions will be restricted: “We’re not going to allow them to move money, but if they want to come in and see their account balances and do research, they will be able to do that through their LLMs.” In an earnings call, he mentioned that Schwab does have a growing subset of clients “that are trading through LLMs and APIs,” and they can only submit requests through the firm’s APIs and MCP servers, where Schwab can control and verify interactions.

Future Darwin Award Winners Based AI People Are Supposedly Smoking Because AI Will Cure Cancer gizmodo.com/based-ai-people-are-sup…
gizmodo.com
Palantir’s CTO, Shyam Sankar, went on CBS’s _Face the Nation_ Sunday and made a crack about AI-pilled tech people smoking because they think AI will cure cancer. On its face, it’s the kind of thing a 13-year-old whose uncle “works at Nintendo” would say. But hey, now that he’s said it on TV, maybe it’ll come true. “Alright I’m going to start smoking now” says probably-kidding-but-maybe-not X user @beep1984 in response to a post about Sankar’s quote. Another X user, Mohammed Fayaz Salim, sounds like he’s not joking—apparently having smoked _before_ becoming AI-pilled. “This is true for me personally. I have been a lot more cavalier once I realized that pretty much any health condition that you have is going to be solved in the 2030s,” Fayaz Salim writes. The actual quote from Sankar is meant to be cautionary. Sankar’s larger point is about people having an almost religious obsession with AI, and then he says this: > _“Like for example, so many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI. […] ‘I believe so much in AI that it’s going to cure cancer. So I will—I’m showing you my chips are all in.’ So there is kind of this mass psychosis social delusion around it.”_ His basis for making this claim is not totally clear. He probably does know some AI researchers, and maybe they smoke, and maybe this really is their stated reason. But he could also be drawing on a Business Insider article from last month about smoking in Silicon Valley with the wonderfully tabloid-y headline, “Silicon Smokers: Meet the tech founders who think that cigarettes are their edge.” That article acknowledges that many Silicon Valley tech workers are enamored with vaping and smokeless nicotine products like Zyn, but a particularly frenzied passage claims: > _[…] a strong counterculture is huffing darts. Engineers are chainsmoking to power through coding sprints. Venture capitalists and founders are talking burn rates while burning tar. For some in tech, amid the noise of optimization, smoking has become the new cignal. _ In other words, this particular “smoking is back” trend piece (and it’s not the first) claims that cigarettes in Silicon Valley are a productivity hack. But then comes a quote from Avi Schiffmann, who you may remember from past Gizmodo articles as being a guy in the tech world who is very good at getting attention. After talking about his own smoking habit, Schiffmann says, “By the time you do get lung cancer, our AI robots are supposed to have cured that.” Anyway, try not to get any stupid ideas from any of this. Not even Grok thinks AI is remotely close to curing cancer.

**¡Sigue patinando!**

Deja-Vu... No, No, No—Don't Peel the Nano-Texture Layer off the iPhone Duo's Inner Screen gizmodo.com/iphone-duo-inner-displa…
gizmodo.com
I can’t believe I even have to say this out loud: do not be the idiot who breaks their new $2,000 iPhone Duo by peeling off the nano-texture layer that covers the inner screen. This morning, YouTuber Quinn Nelson, aka Snazzy Labs, shared on X a list of AppleCare+ prices that Apple will be charging for various repairs, replacements, and servicing for the upcoming iPhone Duo. Notably, the “cover layer” for the inner screen will cost $19, which is good news, because it’s sure better than paying to replace the entire display if only the surface is damaged. > Interesting that the Nano Texture “cover layer” is covered (ha) separately from the inner display. > > On the one hand, AppleCare+ is a non-negotiable on this phone. On the other hand, I’m actually pleased the deductibles are largely the same as other iPhones! pic.twitter.com/AM3HhIKhfV > > — Quinn Nelson (@SnazzyLabs) October 1, 2026 Tech journalist Nicolas Lellouche chimed in, saying, “Apple told me during the event you would be able to replace the Nano texture cover anytime to reduce the crease or remove the damage. Technically speaking, you can remove it by yourself and have a brilliant display.” “This is a GAME Changer if you prefer a glossy display on the iPhone Duo with much better contrast vs a less visible crease,” said YouTuber Vadim Yuryev, who runs the popular Max Tech channel that benchmarks mostly Apple devices. With all due respect to the both of them, do not f*cking do that. Let me repeat it again: do not remove the nano-texture layer on the iPhone Duo’s inner screen yourself just to get a glossy screen. Just because Apple’s repair gurus can _professionally_ replace the cover layer doesn’t mean you, John Smith, should attempt it. I’m pretty sure when Apple’s VP of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron told content creator Angelina Siciliani Fendi that the cover layer is “actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” the exec wasn’t telling customers that they should remove the coating themselves. Doing so would be very, very stupid even if you know how to use a heat gun properly. Not only would you risk potentially damaging the actual display and pixels underneath, but you would also be reducing the screen’s durability with each fold and unfold. It might also prevent Apple Pencil support (coming later this year) from working correctly. And even if Apple Pencil support still works, its tip would be damaging the screen with every contact. While I get that some people are looking at the nano-texture layer on the screen and unhappy that it makes colors less vibrant and blacks not as deep, the layer is a fundamental part of the iPhone Duo—it protects the display while reducing the visibility of the crease. It’s like people have learned absolutely nothing from when reviewers peeled off the film on the original Samsung Galaxy Fold, only to find out that it would destroy the screen. After those early incidents, Samsung included language during setup to remind customers not to remove the film on their own. So let this be a PSA: unless you _want_ to f*ck up your very expensive new foldable iPhone and then cry about it on social media, don’t peel off the nano-texture layer. Even if you do successfully remove it, also don’t apply an aftermarket glossy screen protector. You may end up breaking the display and maybe even borking the under-display FaceTime camera. If you want a foldable phone with a glossy inner screen, Samsung or Xiaomi would be happy to sell you one.
