regardless of today’s outcome, it is morally indefensible to have a court ruling on something that affects a population, using evidence and findings that did not consult a single member of that population.

Please do also *pay* people to do 'EDI'/inclusion roles! Diversity at trustee level is crucial, but just seemingly prioritising diverse insight in unpaid positions is shallow & often abandons critical viewpoints from folk who sit at the intersection between working class & other marginalised groups.

BREAKING: Yuval Abraham, co-director of Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land," says Israeli settlers beat his co-director Hamdan Ballal, injuring his head and stomach — and then Israeli soldiers invaded the ambulance he was in and seized him. Ballal's whereabouts are now unknown.
Tweet from Yuval Abraham:
"A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal, co director of our film no other land. They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him. No sign of him since."

Not to be that dickhead, but I wrote & proposed a policy regarding this YEARS ago and the theatre I was working with at the time said it was unnecessary. It isn't. Platforming marginalised people without centring their safety & wellbeing isn't inclusive - it's performative. We can do better, pals.

Honestly a bit grossed out by the 'you/ your loved ones could become disabled, so we should care about disability rights' posts, you know. We should care about disability rights because there *are* disabled people. That should be all it takes. See also 'what if that was your child getting bombed?'

One of those days where self care looks like me pressing my face into my dog's face & muttering 'you've no idea, do you? You don't even know what the word budget means. You don't know what countries or genders are or anything. You're so lucky. I wish I was you. Don't ever die.' while she just:
My dog, a little black and white staffie, sat on my lap looking shellshocked.

I was commissioned by Culture Counts to write something responding to the theme 'dreaming of a fairer future for culture', which I'll be reading at their core members meeting next week. It'll be my first time reading work aloud & I'm genuinely worried I'm going to ruin my whole ~vibe~ by crying.

Just begging theatre orgs to commit to ringfencing a percentage of programming funds to commission writers who otherwise simply cannot afford to write. The canon can't always fire backwards, babe. Show faith in your contemporary community.

Ok buckle up, rant incoming. I am very tired of organisations, big and small, talking endlessly about our industry and how we can make it fairer, better, not as mental health damaging and then adapting the same old shite practices we've had for over a decade now. Some examples:

Recently had an interview not go my way, which is fine, but I did *so* much work & thinking in prep that I can't let go of. So, if any theatres are interested in evolving from being allies to accomplices & want to discuss researching & embedding ethical systems for authentic theatre-making: HELLO!
Question prompts:

How do we commit to a transparent and robust inclusivity agenda without being prescriptive or inauthentic in our artistic delivery?

How does this agenda extend to our communities in a way that is organic, rather than exploitative?

How do we protect the integrity of the art and the freedom of storytelling while simultaneously protecting the wellbeing of the artist and the subject?

What is the role of authenticity reader, how does it intersect with that of the dramaturg, and how can this be developed to centre lived experience without stifling creative worlds?

Is it possible to embed wellbeing practices in an organisation to ensure consistent and reliable delivery of work that is authentic, nourishing to make, and empowering to engage with – no matter the subject or format?

Is it possible to embed transparent and consistent wellbeing practices and policies across the key areas of theatre: internal development, external engagement, and organisational systems – while still championing creative risk and bold ideas?

Can wellbeing practices actively support creative risk in the rehearsal room?

What changes when we reframe our understanding of making theatre from ‘communities have aright to experience theatre’ to ‘theatre makers have an obligation to serve communities’?

When climate change inequitably affects Black and brown people of the Global Majority, how can we develop wellbeing practices that intersect with the fight for climate justice, to ensure our uplifting of Global Majority voices and experiences is aligned with our collective fight for liberation?

I was lightly involved in a couple of orgs' CS applications this year, and the work, consideration & creativity that goes into them can't be underestimated. These folk have toiled for an unconfirmed future that mobilises art to celebrate, interrogate & build. A future we need, ALL of us. #theatresky
