One of the most disconcerting moments of living in this timeline of the world in the U.S. is that A LOT of people in this country keep acting like there's a special line that needs to be crossed for fascism to *arrive.* The reality is that we are CURRENTLY living under Federal fascism. NOW.

Yeah... for me it's like "even lore/wiki junkies still want a good story", like I wouldn't care about the fictional lore if I didn't already care about the story itself. It's not putting the carr before the horse to care about this kinda thing!

010

Harryhenry @harryhenry.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

...but I can also just enjoy making fictional timelines, family trees, and coming up with theories about how all these stories can fit together. I'm not naive, I know this is all fiction made by artists, but if you do it right it can be genuine harmless fun.

Harryhenry @harryhenry.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

It's also part of this general hostility to worldbuilding, or fans caring about said worldbuilding, as if that is the source of so many problems in fiction today or you're inherently stupid/weird for caring about it. And yeah, in some cases it can go too far, like I'm no powerscaler...

Oh god I remember that "thermian argument" video... it's pretty telling that its one big example is an intentionally gross and creepy strawman anime, like he has to make it so repugnant he has to conjure up this specter of "cringy weebs justifying orcs killing women" to make it seem unreasonable.

That's honestly why I appreciate Farmer's work so much. Not that it's all perfect, there's some weird racial stuff and sexual politics that are indefensible. But I still admire how "go-for-broke" he was, that he just went for these big ambitious concepts without shame or embarrassment.

I don't think Solomon beong related to them means he was retroactively irradiated with special abilities, he's just the ancestor of those who were irradiated.

I recently got Part 2 of DC Finest's Crisis on Infinite Earths collection, and seeing this panel from #5 reminds me that the appeal of these busy images filled with hundreds of characters isn't that far off from Martin Handford's "Where's Wally/Waldo" books.

seeing conservative men debate how to dress online is very funny. can't dress up or wear interesting casualwear bc you've made any visible interest in dress to be a sign of homosexuality. but you feel the need to dress better bc you've linked dress to respectability. a prison of your own making.

As much as I love The Simpsons, them having Tony Blair on as a guest in their "Simpsons go to London" episode on the eve of the Iraq War is easily one of the worst decisions they've ever made.

This is all really cool! I've been thinking about creating my own "ideal shared superhero universe" (and yes, Wold Newton inspired me too!) where characters age and change, and it's so cool seeing what others do with this too... I just hope what I do isn't just ripping you off.

If nothing else, it shows how much an artist adds to a comic when different artists work from the same writer's scripts (who likely scripts comics in the same way regardless) and can produce widely different results.

Harryhenry @harryhenry.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Like look at how ahead of the curve Todd was when it came to page layouts. This is all still from a script by Roy Thomas, but compared to his other golden age book from the same time (All-Star Squadron) it's like it stepped out of the future! thedorkreview.blogspot.com/2019/06/todd...

It was surreal discovering that Todd McFarlane got his start in the industry on Infinity Inc.: An artist who would go on to define the "90s comics" aesthetic, working on an inherently backwards-looking Roy Thomas "Golden Age legacy" comic. It's like a transitional fossil between different species.

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

Larsen's basically turned his Savage Dragon into "Liberal Cerberus the Aardvark", basically using his characters as a jumping off point for whatever's bothering him that day. That's not inherently bad, but it does lead to weird situations like having to address SEX TRAFFICKING in a superhero world.
