I have no wish to piss on my own chips but I think I can see the answer to “why are Man City willing to take a loss on a massively hyped young player in the current CM market, and why is no bigger club coming in to gazump us?” #nufc

Listening to an old BBC interview of JG Ballard from 2002, as one does. Extraordinarily prophetic and deeply unsettling - he'd have loved 2026.

Great to be on BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday talking about Gareth Southgate and whether we need to "teach boys differently". (We don't! This is an area where doing better for boys is most obviously not a zero-sum game - what narrows the gender gap improves outcomes for girls in absolute terms too.)

Hello! Trivial thing but one I figure you'd want flagged: I'm not getting the optimal choice of starting xi, starts Dubravka at 3.0 over Sels at 3.4 (new issue to me just now so could be a gw2 thing) (always possible I'm being dumb and missing something)

This is very good. The Boomer idea that Millennials could buy a house if they only quit their avocado and coffee habits is understandable, because it *was true* for them. They did have to scrimp and save to buy them; they earned far less! It’s just scrimping & saving nowadays doesn’t touch the sides

Idk if this was a guy venting about women in an equivalent way it would rightly be called out as sexist.

It’s great that Robin is going to be kinder to himself. But that shouldn’t be dependent on knowing other people’s brains also work like this! There’s an implication that the label, knowing it’s not just you, is an important part of forgiving yourself for neurodivergent tendencies. It shouldn’t be!

Which is in turn the cause of the gender pay gap: women and men's pay tracks evenly until the first kid arrives. Then women take on fewer hours of paid work and men take on more.

So what is the solution? I think it's obvious. 'Wokeness' has built impressive walls around the people it deems to be in need, but taken to indiscriminately hurling stones at outsiders from the ramparts. It should welcome men within those walls.

Boys and men are constantly, tacitly and explicitly, told that they're the bad guys. What are the attractive messages of the RW misogynists? That they're the good guys. That men are great. @mscaitlinmoran.bsky.social had this nailed.

He gives the game away here - the assumption that work is only a good social habit if you “go out to” it and wfh does not constitute “a full day’s work”. Clearcut example of the resentful wfh-critical boss bsky.app/profile/harr...

“Give us tax relief or we’ll make the England team even shitter than we already are” We desperately need to remove private schools from the youth development system. It’s simple maths that we should dominate the sport - there’s an extremely obvious reason we don’t. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-...

Women's strongest competition/the best place for single guys to look is Enfield, Kensington & Chelsea and Lewisham; for single women (excluding City of London cus yeah no shit) there is a small surplus of men in the salubrious environs of Newham and Tower Hamlets (sorry) No, YOU'RE procrastinating

Regardless of whether the “ethnic enemies” language is straightforwardly racist, opposing being lumped together with historical enemies in the north is a bold position for someone who wants to lead the United Kingdom on behalf of the Conservative and Unionist Party

You can also look at the best firms across our metrics for types of job. So e.g. if you don't have a degree and want a safe and stable customer service job, I'd look into Network Rail.

Harry Carr @harrydcarr.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
You can also look at particular industries - so e.g. looking at financial services, interestingly Schroders and Man Group are among the strongest performers both for access to workers without degrees and for pay

Harry Carr @harrydcarr.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
So e.g. the BBC does well on access and great on promotions, but poorly on retention and pay (compared with what you'd expect given their mix of occupations)

Harry Carr @harrydcarr.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
We compare employers by access for people without degrees, promotions, retention and pay. We make sure it's like-for-like by occupation - so we're comparing the warehouse workers at Tesco and Amazon, but not office administrators at the former with software developers at the latter.

Thinking again about this slide from Focal Data (to whom kudos for transparency - this also applies to NYT/Siena and many others). I said on X at the time that it felt very 2017 - big assumptions that turnout would be like previous elections, which in ‘17 didn’t work out well for those making them.

And I do wonder the extent to which the cause here (again the trend starts pre-Trump) is a) conservatives & media pinning dems here rather than them moving this way of their own volition, b) it being difficult to say dems represent the working class when they clearly lost their votes in 2016
