Excited to share this work out as a preprint! We found that E. faecalis biofilms suppress neutrophil effector functions through two complementary mechanisms: extracellular acidification that dampens ATP and NADPH production and a bacterial density-dependent inhibitory effect.

Loss of Fsr quorum sensing promotes biofilm formation and worsens outcomes in enterococcal infective endocarditis - Nature Communications
Infective endocarditis (IE) is an understudied biofilm-associated infection. Here, analyses of preclinical and clinical data reveal that the Fsr quorum sensing (QS) system of Enterococcus faecalis is a negative regulator of IE pathogenesis.

SCELSE-NTU’s Dr Haris Antypas and Prof Kimberly Kline (UNIGE) show that silencing bacterial communication may worsen infectious endocarditis. Published in Nature Communications, the study finds that when Enterococcus faecalis loses quorum sensing, it forms larger biofilms linked to poorer outcomes.

What if quorum sensing doesn’t promote biofilms - but restrains it? 🤔 New work from @harisantypas.bsky.social shows that the Fsr QS system in Enterococcus faecalis acts as a brake on biofilm formation and pathogenesis during infective endocarditis (IE). www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Lactic acid lover? Check out @ronni.bsky.social 's new work in @cp-cellhostmicrobe.bsky.social showing how Enterococcus faecalis-derived LA suppresses macrophage activation, in turn promoting bacterial persistence and polymicrobial wound infection in vivo. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Check out how 💪🏼Enterococci💪🏼 use lactic acid to suppress the inflammatory response and promote virulence. Project started by Brenda Tien during her PhD and brought home by the always excellent @ronni.bsky.social! 🥳

How does Enterococcal QS activation impact infection outcomes across different host microenvironments? To answer this as fluid dynamics change over the course of infection, @harisantypas.bsky.social led our first foray into enterococcal infective endocarditis w/ some surprisingly results. #microsky
