How far behind the closed frontier are open-weight cyber capabilities? About 6–7 months. Zai’s GLM-5.3 is the highest-scoring open-weight model on our Cyber ECI. Its score of 160 beats OpenAI’s GPT-5.4, released in March.

The wispy curtains of material that shroud stars and brown dwarfs in this #NASAWebb view of IC 348 is rich in carbon-containing molecules that resemble soot. Light from stars reflects off this material, causing it to glow: bit.ly/4iwhW4o
On the left is a large image of a star cluster and nebula, which takes up two-thirds of the view. Wispy filaments of pink-purple fill the middle, curving left and right on either side of the center. The filaments on the right side form a dramatic loop that seems to extend toward the viewer. At lower left, additional filaments are yellowish. Two prominent, bright stars near the center show Webb’s eight-point diffraction spikes. Dozens of fainter stars are scattered across the image. In the bottom third, three small areas are circled and labeled 1, 2, and 3. On the right is a column of three smaller boxes labeled 1, 2, and 3, showing enlarged sections of the full image that align to the numbers in the larger image at left. A pair of faint stars are shown in box 1, while boxes 2 and 3 each highlight a single faint star. The background in the top two images looks light brown, while the background in the third is dark gray.

#NASAWebb peered into the Flame Nebula, locating the faint infrared signatures of several brown dwarfs, objects so small that their cores will never sustain nuclear fusion of hydrogen. The smallest among them is two to three times the mass of Jupiter: bit.ly/4iZyqC8 🔭
A collage of four images showing a dusty nebula. Two-thirds of the collage is taken up by a single image of the nebula, while the remaining third shows three insets stacked on top of each other. In the largest image at left, there is an orange and yellow fang-like cloud of matter that cuts this section in two. The top side of the fang shows more clouds of a dark brown shade, while the bottom shows filaments of light brown. There are a number of bright blue and red points of light spread throughout, three of which are circled in white and labeled with a number from one to three. Circle 1 is located at about 9 o’clock in the middle of the fang-like cloud, while Circle 2 is at about 2 o’clock and Circle 3 is located at about 4 o’clock, toward the bottom left. Each circle magnifies an individual object, which is shown in the three squares to the right, labeled 1 to 3 from top to bottom. Each image contains a single, fuzzy point of light in the middle.

#NASAWebb has pinpointed the host galaxy of the most distant fast radio burst ever seen. The galaxy proved surprisingly small and young, which provides a clue to the source of the burst: news.stsci.edu/4hEmZip 🔭

A small galaxy at lower right is highlighted with a white box. A shaded triangle extends upward to the corners of a larger box showing a zoom in of the region. Two fuzzy, light blue blobs are at center of the box, with a larger and brighter one at top. Just above the top blob is a white crosshair showing the location where a fast radio burst was detected.

Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).
Screencap

"“I fought to bring the software legitimacy so that it — and those building it — would be given its due respect, and thus I began to use the term ‘software engineering’ to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process,” Hamilton told El Pais in 2018. “When I first started using this phrase, it was considered to be quite amusing. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. Software eventually and necessarily gained the same respect as any other discipline.”"

While mountains give us high-altitude dark skies, they disrupt smooth airflow, forcing the air to break into turbulent pockets. This atmospheric jitter is called "seeing." NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory was intentionally built where coastal airflow passes smoothly over the ridge. 🔭🧪

NEW: The contrasting colors in NGC 7129 show differences in temperatures detected by #NASAWebb. The gold cavity at the left is hottest due to the central star and other embedded stars. The clumpy, red matter is colder and represents jets from less mature protostars: news.stsci.edu/3U8T7Bz 🔭
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display the Webb Telescope’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star, which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image/

#NASAWebb has provided a crash course on planet-shattering collisions, providing clues to the amount of energy in their collisions. (1/6) 🧵 🔭 🧪
Artist’s concept of a star and its debris disk against the black background of space. The star is in the background, right of center, and depicted as a small, luminous sphere. The debris disk is a large blue ring that encircles the star. The debris disk is angled toward the viewer, so that the portion nearest to the viewer extends beyond the bottom frame of the illustration. Many dark, rocky fragments are scattered throughout the debris disk. In the foreground, toward the left, is a small planetary embryo colliding into the left side of a larger spherical object. The impact site glows bright yellow and orange and has a mottled appearance, as though chunks of both colliding bodies are breaking up and being destroyed. Orange-yellow streams of vapor extend outward from the collision area. Behind the debris disk and its star are many small stars in the background. A label in the bottom right corner reads “Artist’s Concept.”

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
