Zo wordt de druk op D66-minister Vijlbrief opgevoerd om tot bezuinigingen in de sociale zekerheid te komen.

Claude Sonnet 5 (at medium effort) seems to very often just start a new sentence randomly while it was still working on another one. Reads like a 5yo just rambling through a story...

German federal states elect at separate dates. Why is this? It seems to me that results in one state strongly influence voting behavior in the next. In other countries (sure, different democratic systems, I know) these are simultaneous for (nationally) obvious reasons.

A student today told me that I reminded her of Hank Green. I had no idea who that was (he said from under his stone), but after looking him up on the tubez, I'll gladly take that as a compliment.

Normally, I'd be interested in joining the Recognition & Rewards Festival to discuss ways forward for the scientific community and its reward structures. One very rude and genuinely unfriendly speaker on the program is enough for me to not join. Too bad, the rest of the lineup looks pretty great!

OK, Jesse Minter seems to be doing a decent job. Still, the whole 16 years that I have been following the Baltimore Ravens, Harbough was head coach, and that alone is unique enough to still kind of miss the face along the sideline.

Those AI bosses coming with "warnings", is much more likely to be some commercially or politically smart move to become more powerful and/or richer, than that it actually means that we are now crossing some point of no return towards destruction.

On our debut @puzzledpint.bsky.social night we were with a team of three and managed to solve all puzzles without any hints. Admittedly, the solution to the bonus puzzle only presented itself on the way home, but still! Obviously, I forgot to take pictures. Maybe a next time, which will come!

I never really thought of mazes as puzzles. The book The Puzzler, by AJ Jacobs made me reconsider my stance. I'm still not sure about them as puzzles, but some really are pieces of art! These are by David Millar (aka The Griddle) and Michelle Boggess-Nunley. Go look them up!
A recent maze by Dave Millar, aka The Griddle, with 10 segments connected by openings in the walls and tunnels in the middle. More at thegriddle.netA recent maze by Michelle Boggess-Nunley, with a route going over and under walls in an almost Escher-like cityscape. More at

Apparently, ERC is still considering putting a wait year as punishment for a rejected grant proposal. With a lottery, that we know it is, that is completely unreasonable. Also, it will only increase the Matthew effect, and I think most agree that this effect is fundamentally undesirable.

It has been a while, but 800mL of cold drip coffee has been made! This is with beans grown on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Flavor tests soon.
Coffee being brewed very slowly: the 800mL takes close to 4 hours to drip through. Fresh cold drops of coffee. The full cold drip tower at the very start of the brew.

I keep doing them every day, but those daily, and far too obviously machine generated LinkedIn #puzzles keep annoying me with their unnecessary (even redundant) constraints. Every half decent puzzle creator would leave them out and that won't even change the difficulty of the puzzle.

A museum should absolutely have a good museum cafe. Or at the very least a nice place to sit and contemplate. Attention to the atmosphere of the cafe is something that sets a museum apart, for me.

Of course it's all small number statistics, but basically everyone I know who has received a VENI from NWO is an assistant professor. In my experience, this used to be "the grant for postdocs", which usually was the stepping stone to get a tenure track job. What's this shift all about?

Unpopular opinion: being a postdoc shapes you as a scientist. Aside from job insecurity, this an essential phase of an academic career that should not be sidestepped by making people assistant professor right out of their PhD.

Causal analysis is over-rated. Also, the term is confusing (especially for the general audience), as it gives the impression that we figure out causal connections, which only under very rare conditions is true.
