A huge proportion of climate solutions journalism is focused entirely on 'we promise this can be fixed without you having to change anything', and they'll accept wild, absurd and almost fraudulently misleading greenwashing uncritically so that message can be preserved (also see: the seaweed guy)

The MF Hydra is Norway's Ship of the Year 2021. It is also the first and only ship powered by Liquefied Hydrogen (LH₂). And... I don't know where to start... 🚢 This ship isn't just running on Hydrogen, it is running on Liquefied Hydrogen.

In discussions about clean Hydrogen, there is a popular idea floating around, particularly in countries like Germany or Japan that import most of their fossil fuel energy. Instead of importing fossil fuels, we will import Hydrogen in the future from places where renewables are cheap. ⚡💧🚢🏭 🔌💡 🧵

There was no Q&A after my #38C3 talk, but in the chat, someone asked an interesting question. I said in that Methanol is the simplest carbon-containing liquid, the person remarked that this would instead be formic acic + asked whether using formic acid instead of methanol would be interesting.

The only operational large-scale methane pyrolysis plant currently does not sell any hydrogen. It just flares it. Methane pyrolysis is often pitched as a "more efificent" method than electrolysis for hydrogen production.

Methane pyrolysis, first and foremost, produces carbon. It only produces around 1 ton of hydrogen per unit of carbon. That carbon, if used in various industrial applications, also has an emission footprint.

Lately, I have seen an increasing number of posts mentioning something called methane pyrolysis or "turquoise hydrogen" as a potential way to produce clean hydrogen from fossil gas. But the claims that surround this turquoise hydrogen don't stand up to scrunity. 🧵 🔌💡
