Ugh Map Men you can't quote Max Weinreich on languages AND do a language map about Austria-Hungary which includes Italian and not Yiddish! Like, MAYBE IT'S RELEVANT in a video about land/language/nation correlation or lack thereof? AND WEINREICH SAID IT IN YIDDISH! youtu.be/hX21ctsGhNc?...

She was talented in everything I saw her in but she was PERFECT inCabin Pressure from the very first moment. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate what she contributed to a show that has meant so much to me and many others. RIP Carolyn- I hope Arthur’s okay…

This is absolutely fascinating- so much great info on a topic I thought I already knew quite a bit about. Idk if the author is on here but I’d be fascinated to know if there’s info on Cournos’s Jewish upbringing- a lot of weird claims are made about DLS’s relationship w Jews vis a vis Cournos…

This time last week I'd have said I know nothing about ice dance and I still don't, but I do have a pair of functioning eyes (with corrective lenses) and it is SO clear that Chock and Bates were robbed

My favorite media headcanon is that the characters on Frasier and Black Frasier (the parody version on 30 Rock) all exist and live in Seattle, usually JUST missing each other- until the S9 Frasier episode Bristle While You Work, when White Niles and Roz see Black Niles and Daphne at Cafe Nervosa.

So curious about the thinking behind this choice of cover, both in terms of era (Raffles is [spoiler alert] long canonically dead by the time people were dressing like this) and also... this is RAFFLES, who puts a picture of a male/female couple on the cover of a RAFFLES collection?!

Seeing a bunch of people posting about their AI skepticism coming from significant disappointment in past use, so just want to share this piece of logical brilliance from today, when I tried to find out if Hoboken has an eruv.
Google's AI overview says "Hoboken doesn't have its own distinct, independent Eruv; instead, the vibrant Jewish community often relies on nearby, established Eruvim, primarily the Teaneck-Bergenfield Eruv or the Greater Metro Eruv (GME) for Jersey City, which are complex physical boundaries that allow observant Jews to carry on Shabbat (the Sabbath).

At the moment it is so much easier to focus on this very real act of heroism than the very real many dead so I am going to do that, actually Happy Chanukah, I guess…? Like, it isn’t even Chanukah yet and already it’s like…

Watching Mary Poppins to celebrate Dick van Dyke’s birthday and I actually think it’s a perfect movie Like maybe the animated sequence is a bit too long but no idea what I’d cut (Also DVD’s accent isn’t his fault, it’s so consistent that he clearly tried but with bad guidance- plus it’s fun!)

Crazy to me how the next book Madeleine L'Engle wrote after A Wrinkle in Time was The Arm of the Starfish Like, "I've written about a brilliant young teen protagonist with an older boy side character, my next book will have her as the self-effacing mom of his seven children and HE'S the scientist"

OKAY, for my own enjoyment I'm writing a spoiler-free review thread of Wake Up Dead Man, or as I've been mentally calling it the new Knives Out movie, though if you want to go into the movie TOTALLY blind definitely skip this- THREAD BELOW:

Watching Wake Up Dead Man after having read Locked Room Murders by Robert Adey makes the solution not very difficult but also VERY fun (My feelings on the movie are complex but mainly very positive if only for the incredibly fun golden age allusions)

Leverage-style period piece starring the Cattery from Dorothy L Sayers's Wimsey books, society's forgotten women going undercover and solving crimes- can be a movie or a show, don't care AND/OR Give John Finnemore a bunch of money and let him do what he wants (spec movie bc curious what he'd do)

Having read the ATRA rabbinical field study (and in fact participated as a non-rabbi survey respondent), I am sympathetic with Shira Koch Epstein's frustration with the focus on the flaws at the expense of findings BUT... those flaws were major. 1/ ejewishphilanthropy.com/atra-study-p...

Atra study provides rare, caveated glimpse into the U.S. rabbinate, offering insight and concern
Survey finds rabbis increasingly shying away from pulpit posts, seeing them as too demanding, and that majority of rabbinical students are LGBTQ+

I don't think this is actually what RJ did purposefully BUT I'm of the opinion that a) the original Knives Out mystery plot (as in case itself, not trimmings) is much more Carr than Christie and b) it's basically the plot of He Who Whispers just like Glass Onion is the plot of Dead Man's Folly

Not nearly as impressive as when Monty Python's Life of Brian was protested by 1000 rabbis (represented by one guy who ran three different rabbinical associations full of rabbanim who'd probably never heard of the movie) www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

IDK if I have enough Jewish Studies followers on here but- Interested in any books on the development of Jewish liturgy- preferably in English. Any topic from medieval piyut to the introduction of guitar into services to whatever else. Maybe books from rabbinical/cantorial school reading lists?

OK nobody needs this but I was rewatching Night of the Hunter and it only just hit me that when John tells Miss Cooper that he thought the story he wanted to hear again had two kings, he means Pharaoh AND Moses, who a) she called "king of men" and b) she identified with his journey Love this movie

A lot of people see the Benoit Blanc movies as Christie homages- and of course they are- but in many ways, though Glass Onion is clearly influenced by Christie, Knives Out reminds me just as much of John Dickson Carr- as in, Knives Out is to He Who Whispers what Glass Onion is to Dead Man's Folly.

I just watched The Philadelphia Story and maybe it's because I'm hangry and have a headache but it may honestly be one of the worst movies I've ever seen The point of the movie was to knock Katherine Hepburn down a few pegs and oh my god watching it happen was nauseating and made no narrative sense

So I watched Anatomy of a Murder with Jimmy Stewart two days ago, somehow never saw it before, and I'm still ruminating over it-what a phenomenal movie I love how it takes Jimmy Stewart and has us see how the "affable Jimmy Stewart" sausage is made- we see him purposely pull out all his tricks...

This is fascinating and reminds me of this answer I did on @askhistorians.bsky.social way back, on when the phrase "World War 1" started being used. Turns out, when you search the phrase in Ngram before 1939ish the results are mostly mid-sentence fragments containing "I" or "1" in other contexts.

Oooh, this is a fun one! Casablanca and Get Smart, on two very different notes... More seriously, he's the one who got me watching, enjoying, and appreciating "old stuff"- whether the rural purge sitcoms he grew up watching or classic film, which led to an abiding interest in the topic/era.

Lots of very clear counterarguments in the quotes/replies here, but also, some of the best comedy is critical (and I don't mean bullying) of people who are kind, honest, friendly, and cooperative. Because no good character is ONLY those things. Short thread:

I keep seeing people say that SH is full of "phrenology" and that just isn't true. It has SOME physiognomy, which isn't great, but not as much as people think. It has anthropological skull stuff, but mostly from another character, not Holmes. And it doesn't have phrenology.

Just finished The Residence. Very fun, but with a few glaring holes. In a way, reminds me of Mike Schur's recent Inside Man- also fun but not as much of a mystery as it's made out to be, bc narratively/technically there aren't many options. Also, MILD SPOILER, why didn't people hear the murder?!

Adding a new item to my wish list of Lord Peter Wimsey TV adaptations, and a good one for any producers who just want to test the waters- an Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club adaptation. Not super reliant on recurring characters, great story, interesting themes about masculinity and trauma...

Sometime this week is the five year anniversary of what was probably the worst day of my life (and the start of one of the worst periods), and it’s wild that that’s likely the case for lots of people given what exactly was going on five years ago. Makes me feel less lonely in it.

Something you may not know about me (but *certain people* ABSOLUTELY do) is that one of my hobbies is arguing with people who believe that Ronald Knox's Decalogue was a) a manual for golden age detective fiction writers and b) something that limited the genre/made it less creative.
