1/ "A lot of teenagers want clarity about what they can trust." Meet Ridley Mentzer, 14, from Los Angeles, whose service project about helping his peers find credible information won an eighth-grade fair competition. He was awarded $100 that he could donate to a nonprofit, & he chose NLP.

Nothing can touch me today because I’m quoted in Scholastic News. I know third grade Hannah, who lived for Scholastic book fairs, would be very proud. 📚
An issue of Scholastic News magazine is open to a two-page story about social media influencers. The headline is “Be a smart scroller.”

Liz was one of my first friends at the Star Tribune. She's passionate, kind and — like many in the Twin Cities — exhausted. Liz talked to the AP about juggling daycare concerns while she and her husband cover a story with no end in sight. This is local journalism. apnews.com/article/immi...
An excerpt from an AP story quoting public safety reporter, Liz Sawyer:
As a reporter, Sawyer says the public response to the outlet’s work, sharing stories and images, has lifted her spirits. Readers see it as public service journalism. Still, she could use a break. She and her husband, Star Tribune photographer Aaron Lavinsky, have a baby daughter and make sure to stagger their coverage. They can’t both be tear-gassed or arrested at the same time; who makes the daycare pickup?

“I think both residents and journalists in this town are running on fumes,” she said. “We’re tired of being in the international spotlight and it’s never for something positive. People are trying their best to get through this moment with grace.”

Yeeep. A quick Google search is usually all you need to turn up reams of coverage for whatever topic “the media isn’t covering.” With platforms de-prioritizing news, it might feel like journalists are ignoring a story, but it’s likely just that an algorithm hasn’t surfaced it in your feed.

This is one of the most well-written explanations of certain kinds of AI errors I’ve seen to date. (The whole article is great too.) www.theverge.com/c/24300623/a...
When you pose the question to a language model, what you are really asking is, “Given the statistical distribution of words in the vast public corpus of text, what are the words most likely to follow the sequence ‘what country is to the south of Rwanda?’” Even if the system responds with the word “Burundi,” this is a different sort of assertion with a different relationship to reality than the human’s answer, and to say the AI “knows” or “believes” Burundi to be south of Rwanda is a category mistake that will lead to errors and confusion.
