I tried the あかすり at the onsen today. A sweet 70 year old Chinese lady telling me about her late Japanese husband of 18 years who would always praise and encourage her no matter what and talking about him nearly made her cry and she was so precious Also I have the skin of a newborn baby now

i think we all need to normalize just being comfortable with giving earnest compliments without weird caveats. if your friend does something cool, tell them it’s cool. i don’t necessarily thrive on compliments, but it does means a lot if a friend goes out of their way to say something kind to me.
