Unexpected benefit of AI-assisted coding #57: it always feels nice to get a "job well done" pat on the back, and it doesn't really matter that it's coming from an LLM. I suspect this also plays a big role in forming a strong emotional dependency on AI in the workplace.

Kinda related: Coding agents are an absolute superpower for people with ADHD. I have like 5 ideas per minute, and now I can just throw each one into a separate thread and keep going. Before that, I could hardly finish anything without medication.

Unexpected benefit of AI-assisted coding: I now have a way to remember the current status of any sub-task I'm working on, either by looking at the logs or asking the agent directly. Previously, the first 10 minutes of any work session was just trying to remember what the hell I'd been doing.

First serious work I do with Claude Code, and I was able to pretty easily add a new API endpoint that now lets me automatically highlight strong correlations between any two variables in a survey. I still hand-coded the UI though!

One thing that I hadn't fully realized before: it's not (just) that AI coding makes you dependent because your own coding skills atrophy, it's also because your codebase quickly becomes the agent's codebase, and you need it to move forward at all. You become locked-in pretty much instantly…

It used to be, the effort required to produce code gave the end result intrisinc value; and the value produced in turn made the effort worth it. I feel like AI has broken that equilibrium. Now when I look at software, I find myself wondering why I should care more and more.

Hot take: I'm playing A Link to the Past for the first time in 2026, and I don't think it holds up as much as people think it does. A lot of the game design feels arbitrary and disconnected, and the dungeons would be downright unplayable for me without emulation letting you quick-save anywhere.
