Day 3 Field School. Jensen Reservoir and Cretaceous Beach deposits, Del Bonita uplands outside the reach of the Laurentide Ice Sheet - a remnant periglacial landscape, and the Rocky Mountains. Hello Waterton and the Purcell Super Group, 1.3 Billion yrs old. Geologists- the ultimate time travellers.

Day 4: 1st geology field school. What a stunner of a day, Robin egg blue skies, perfect temperatures. The students are spoiled as they learn about the formation of the Rocky Mountains, visit the famous Frank Slide, and marvel at the bizarre melinite (Ti-rich garnets) bearing Crowsnest Volcanics.
Cameron Falls in Waterton townsite, Waterton National Park. A hanging valley leading into the main trunk valley filled by Waterton Lakes. Also cutting into 1.5 billion year old Waterton formation rocks. Some of the oldest in the Canadian Rockies. Also the place of the first oil and gas well - they have been thrust over the much younger organic rich Cretaceous western Canadian sedimentary basin rocks - which have the oil. Frank Slide - massive collapse of Turtle Mountain in 1906 buried the town of Frank. Lundbreck Falls and Crowsnest River flowing over Belly River (Cretaceous) group rocks. Flowing the same direction today as the rivers that deposited it. Coming down off a kame terrace formed by the stagnating Cordilleran Ice Sheet that is the stunning home to the famous Prince of Wales hotel today.

Day 5: 1st yr geology field school, Fernie-Radium. My favourite day, I get to go home to the East Kootenays. The structurally curious Rocky Mountain Trench, big bad-ass Cordilleran ice sheet geomorphology, complexly deformed Devonian limestone, and travertine and tufa at Fairmont Hot Springs. ⚒️🧪
Amazing climbing ripples of fine sand to silt, deposited as part of a kame terrace complex, likely in an ice marginal lake. So much sediment!!Our mascot checking out old travertine mount just above the current pools at Fairmont hot springs. The Kootenay River at Canal Flats where is flows into the trench to go south into the USA to eventually join the Columbia. Meanwhile, about 2 km north of us is Columbia Lake - the headwaters of the Columbia River that flows north. Lowest drainage divide ever.
And yes, if you stick your head in the water you can hear the sediment moving!!!First stop of the day, overlooking the Kootenay River on the Fort Steele Warner Road. Outwash terraces, kame terraces, Roche moutonees of my!!

Next we stop at a favourite: Saskatchewan Crossing. #strataday. Loess, paleosols, and three (!) volcanic ash: Mazama, Mount St Helens Yn and Bridge River. Doesn’t get much better, unless you like glaciers. We finish at Athabasca Glacier. Beautiful but heart breaking in her steady retreat. 🧪⚒️
TA Shaun, from VARG, in his element teaching the students about volcanic ash, you can see two clear in this picture, Mazama at his knee and he is looking at Mount St Helens YnA group of young Bighorn sheep by Athabasca Glacier - a classic site in the Rockies! Student Lachlan looks to the distance inspecting end moraines with the Athabasca glacier behind him. Saskatchewan River Crossing with the loess cap on the terrace to the right, full of silt, paleosols and tephra!

Day 6: 1st year field school, Radium to Jasper. Last full field day, starting at the Columbia River by Radium, type example of an anastomosing river. Critical wetland habitat. Mapping massive thrust faults in Sinclair Canyon, showing the growing of the Canadian Rockies, another favourite 🧵
Teaching Assistant Shaun showing the crew some amazing slicken-sides and how the can help figure out direction of movement on a faultOur dear mascot standing on a thrust fault trace pushing the hanging wall in the right direction! Pentaceratops strong! Drag folds on another fault trace, marked by dinosaur. Also showing thrusting. Yes, compression built the Rockies! A classic fold and thrust belt.Overlooking the Columbia River by Radium, a classic example of an anastomosing river - multiple channels, vegetated levees, very low gradient, wetlands, sand and silt, aggrading, check check check!

To say things are grim right now is an understatement. So we would like to share a bit of fun. In honour of VARG PhD @hanaayousif.bsky.social finally adopting her furry feline, we present "THE CATS OF VARG". We start with the cat of the hour, Pliny! Yes, in honour of Plinian eruptions. #cats 🌋
