One of the greatest spreads ever to appear in Viz. I used to have this framed on my wall.

It didn't help that a boy from our school had been blown apart by the IRA in the Royal Marines School of Music bomb, the year before.

Nutters in the RE department invited a reformed IRA terrorist to give an assembly. He raved about how he gave it all up after finding God, before illustrating his former life by asking one kid to look under their seat - where he'd put a fake bomb. Parents went apeshit. Think it made the local paper.

I have spent weeks shadowing the RNLI and I can tell you, they do it out of nothing more than compassion. Wrote about the heroes I've met over the years in this free-to-read post. nicolakelly.substack.com/p/the-rnli-a...

Liked his first album a lot. And when it was pointed out that one riff on Ever Since New York seemed to be owe a lot to Badfinger, he said yup, our bad. So if you look on ASCAP, Peter William Ham has a songwriting credit on the LP.

If I were PM, I'd force every one of the people - I use the term loosely - who attack the RNLI to watch this astonishing BBC film about the Penlee Lifeboat disaster. I'd then have them shoved off the end of a pier, so it's just as well I'm only a freelance writer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeIX...

I was a features sub. The asst night editor said: "We've chucked all the features out of the edition. Can you sub news?" He passed me and a few other casuals over to news, who showed us the style: cap up the first word, no drop caps, cut from the foot of the story.

I was hearing various bits from other subs across London: people were bricking it in the Canary Wharf tower, with rumours of an evacuation. I got released early to go to the Express at Blackfriars, which was buzzing. Lots of subs had seen the news and come in on their day off.

Gradually, websites got overloaded and fell over, except for the PB board. I yelled "Christ, another plane has hit the second tower." The digital editor shouted: "That's just Popbitch bollocks." Then someone switched a TV on. Not much work done at EMAP after that.

At FHM I got an SMS on my old Nokia lump from a friend subbing on a news shift at the Guardian: "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center". I imagined something like a King Kong biplane. I opened the Popbitch message board. That was when it registered.

Twenty-five years ago, I was part of the army of freelance sub-editors schlepping between newspapers and mags in London. Diary for 11 Sep was a double-booking: a day shift at FHM and an evening at the Daily Express.

Picked this up yesterday for two quid in a charity shop. The errors (Steptoe was a "dustman" and Life of Brian was "a cruel parody of the life of Christ", for example) aren't even the worst bit. Some of his judgements are utterly bizarre.

Since it's not explained in the theme song, the show title must have been completely mystifying for viewers of the first series. It's not a well-known expression even in South East London, is it?
