Zizek, the transformation from doing good philosophy to doing bad philosophy is pretty dramatic.

After that he made Hearts of the World to encourage American participation in WWI, I highly recommend Michael Rogin's analysis of Griffith's career in chapter 7 of his book Ronald Reagan: The Movie. There's a smidge about Intolerance there too.

My first crack at the final puzzle in the main campaign. Realizing that I could almost triple the efficiency with well-timed rotations (building multiple compounds at once). I totally get why the community around this game has lasted a decade, always cheaper, faster, more compressed ways to build.

This resonates so beautifully with what Michael Barkun called "stigmatized knowledge"--the way bodies of information that have been disdained by experts actually *gain* power in the mind of the conspiracy theorist. Not talked about enough in our understandings of the epidemiology of knowledge, imo

This was a great read and a helpful reference for the future. I'm always trying to tell people that our early Christian texts' conceptualization of "the poor" is utterly patronizing.

Spectacular Roman octopus mosaic from the floor of the women’s changing room at the Central Baths in ancient Herculaneum. 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a monochrome Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. This octopus detail comes from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures which include the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish. From the floor of the women's changing room at the Central Baths in Herculaneum.

We see *in Augustine's own writings* that Manicheans identified as Christians. Augustine's project was part of a process of boundary policing Manichean Christians from being entitled to this name and contemporary scholars (especially theologians) continuously reinscribe this.

Scott Maybell @haliphron.ink · 22/08/2026
One terrible misunderstanding that gets taught and re-taught in theology classrooms is the idea that Augustine converted from Manicheaism to Christianity. This is not true. He converted from Manichaean Christianity to Catholic Christianity; the Manichaeans were Christian and self-identified as such.

This is why my imagination is solely occupied by the Greendale Human Being.
The Greendale Human Being is the school mascot designed and created by Dean Pelton and Pierce Hawthorne. Dean Pelton wanted to create a new mascot for Greendale as he felt the old mascot, a Grizzly bear, was not politically correct enough. Pierce volunteers to help him, and they both set out to design the least offensive mascot possible. What they came up with was a mascot in a tight fitting grey unitard with the Greendale logo on its chest. It was wearing a faceless mask that had crudely drawn eyes and mouth. The mask itself was tight as well and did not allow the person wearing it to see or breathe well. It first appeared in the Season One episode "Football, Feminism and You" and it makes subsequent appearances throughout the series, both in mascot form and in images on various Greendale paraphernalia. The Human Being was first portrayed by William Love. He and a few other actors have worn the mascot suit since then. In the Community webisode series "Dean Pelton's Office Hours", the Human Being is portrayed by a female.

"The ancient Mediterranean world's vegetarianism was always about purity and asceticism, not about moral concern for Nonhuman Animals." Plutarch:
Humans have so
much natural shame at consuming the flesh of other
creatures that they disguise it by cooking and spicing it so
as to make it unrecognizable But nothing abashed us, not the flower-like tintingof the
flesh, not the persuasiveness of the harmonious voice, not the
cleanliness of their habits or the unusual intelligence thatmay
be found in the poor wretches. No, forthe sake of a little
flesh we deprive them of sun, of light, of the duration of life
to which they are entitled by birthand being. Then we go on
toassume thatwhen they uttercries and squeaks their speech
is inarticulate, thatthey do not, begging formercy, entreat-
ing, seeking justice, each of them say, "I do not ask tobe
spared incase of necessity; only spare me your arrogance!
Kill me to eat, but not to please your palate!" (Cherniss and
Helmbold 549-51)He notes, for example, that the eating of meat is unnatural and was forced upon man by crop failure when the earth was first forming. Such a lifestyle is no longer justified at a time when the earth produces an overabundance of edible plants.

We've got two thousand years of readers picking up Plutarch's dialogues on Socrates' demon and on the face of the moon, all of them stimulated by the same imaginative spark: Where does the father of Zeus sleep? How people respond to that question in different contexts is infinitely fascinating.

The main scholar I cite is part of a tradition of trying to identity the actual location of the island, based on textual clues (vague enough that looser thinkers have speculated that Plutarch is describing the Americas!), but I would love to find something closer to a reception history of the idea.
