Also finished Trans Technologies by @haimson.bsky.social (2025). Not a trans history book, but relevant for a peripheral argument I’m making in my comps exam. That said, incredibly cool to have a book that provides perhaps the most comprehensive list of trans technologies.

To no one's surprise, we found that minoritized groups (transgender, nonbinary, mixed race, disabled, and/or neurodivergent people) report higher levels of algorithmic harm than others.

Oliver Haimson @haimson.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Researchers can use this scale on surveys to measure algorithmic harm overall, or its subscales (algorithmic stigma, algorithmic privacy harms, and tangible algorithmic harms), across different systems, contexts, and populations.

Our design implications for future online information sharing platforms that balance patients' and surgeons' needs involve surgeon-verified information, surgeon anonymity, credential verification, searchable FAQs, and integrated community knowledge.

We considered how an online communication platform could support both surgeons and trans people seeking surgery. The two groups hold values in tension (information sharing, risk, and reputation), but also values in alignment (information accuracy, transparency, and communication efficiency).

We show how these groups' urgent infrastructural and contextual needs are often overlooked in social media platforms; they develop workarounds, engage in self-censorship, and adopt coping strategies, undertaking additional, often invisible, sociotechnical repair work that reinforces their precarity.
