"You can just ask me." Ben sucks noisily at the straw of his soda when she doesn’t respond. "If you want. Whatever."

"My — therapist has been suggesting this thing. It's dumb.”

“Yeah?” Ben turns toward her, his knee bumping the divider in between them on the bench so people don’t sleep on it.

“Like, trying writing or whatever."

"Oh, that's awesome. Can I read it?"

The Luke-voice in her head fades. "You'd want to?"

"Never mind."

"No, no, I was going to — it's just kind of embarrassing. It’s Supernatural fanfiction,” she says in a rush.

“Wait — don’t you hate that shit? We used to make fun of it together!” Ben looks almost hurt, which is so dumb, and moves like he’s going to scoot away.

Rey frowns, annoyed. “Yeah. It’s stupid. But I…I still like writing about it.”

“I’m sure you’re like, good or whatever.” Ben looks forward, out at the parking lot, the center of the shopping center where they both work now, at chain stores at opposite sides. “Even though the show is garbage.”

“You don’t have to read it.”

“I want to.”

She doesn’t miss the Jedi school. Except for that one soup. And how she used to see Ben every day, in the morning, in the afternoon, sweaty after sparring. In the afternoons, the random times Luke would let them watch the TV, the Supernatural DVDs someone had found in the trash one night while doing rounds. At night, whispering quiet enough that Luke couldn’t hear them, both of them in his bunk, squished together, the bed so small, both of them carefully not touching.

“I do want you to. Just. It's kind of like…perverted.” She turns to him, trying to make him get it. “No. Not perverted. It’s like, normal. But it’s kind of —”

"Can you just tell me."

"You don't have to say it like such a dick."

"I just wanna know."

It’s so good, being out of there. Even though they both have jobs and roommates now (they complain to each other, spilling out details to each other when they meet up, which helps) there’s so much more of the world they can experience now.

It can be terrifying, sometimes. But it’s worth it for all this. For the sugary sodas they’re both drinking right now, the cigarettes they smoke together sometimes, Ben solemn as he bends to light hers. The way Ben can slouch now, and doesn’t have to always hold himself in perfect posture. The way Rey dow whatever she wants, whenever she wants, just because she want to, and now there’s a tattoo creeping up Rey’s ankle that her nice new friend Rose had given her with a ballpoint pen and a Takka-sterilized needle, which Ben had examined, his fingers hovering above her skin as he traced the design, never touching as he told her, with a very satisfying confidence: “It looks like you.”

“The characters in my…thing — they have sex. Like, it’s not bad, it’s part of it.”

“No, I — yeah. Um. Okay.”

Oh god, all the bites on his neck. "I'm really, really sorry."
Ben turns toward her on the bed, so they're looking at each other, their faces half-covered by sheets. "Was I too —"

"No!" She puts a hand out, trying to comfortingly pat his shoulder, and feels the raised warmth of herclaw marks. She withdraws her hand. "Sometimes I'm not great with — gentle."
"Yeah." Ben pats her ass.
And maybe it's his kind — and just ever so slightly condescending — tone. Or the fact that she really isn't good with gentleness. Or maybe just the fact that she really does, it turns out, like the feeling of Ben's hand on her ass, in several varying degrees of force.
She scrunches her nose at him. "I mean. You also didn't have to try to get me so hard you knocked over the lamp. Wasn't that your grandfather's?"
Ben's hand pauses. She looks behind her and half-smiles, pressing herself into his big palm.
It's fine. She's pretty sure she still has some concealer under the sink he can borrow for tomorrow, she thinks, smiling bigger as Ben raises his hand.
