Rey is in love.
A renovated studio further from campus just got listed on the rentals, minimally furnished with lots of natural daylight. Nowhere near as cheap as her current place, though. And, okay, she can’t roll out of bed five minutes before class—but still? Her current “very serious engineering students” roommates are intellectual snobs and she’s desperate to leave.
She’d get so much new space.
Way, way more privacy.
And she can focus on actually making art instead of zoning out next to a blank canvas and worrying about not being seen as a “real serious artist.” Or meeting her friends after some nepo baby’s exhibition (like, how else can they have a show with that kind of technique???) and getting stoned and depressed outside the gallery about having achieved nothing in comparison.
The landlord being an easy-going supercar influencer is a plus. Mid-20s. Glued to his phone and was gifted the apartment by his stepdad so he could learn “responsibilities”—which means he does fuck all about tenant screenings but won’t give her a concrete answer because “Art School Kids” are flighty.
But if she could get a guarantor—maybe her parents or something—

On the pavement outside the studio, she chews the insides of her cheek and stares at her phone. She hates asking him for help. Especially him. It feels weak. Like she needs him (but she does.)
And he already gives her enough.
Sometimes too much.
Plus he’s busy. It’s three in the afternoon on a Tuesday. He’s probably teaching some undergrad class while rolling his eyes or leading some snoozefest faculty meeting about sourcing grants or petulantly grading midterm assignments in the brave new world of GenAI-fuckery.

She pulls up their chat. wyd? she types.
Walking two blocks down, she orders an oat milk latte and a pandan coconut muffin. She sits on one of the park benches that’s surrounded by flower beds. She checks her phone and smiles.

It was not a career path for everyone.

There was no straight line from your interests in high school to an undergraduate degree. No trade school. No internship opportunities or role shadowing.

No, there was only one way into this kind of job. You have to have lived it first. And no one with a lick of sense would volunteer for that kind of experience.

Rey wouldn’t have chosen this either. However, children aren’t usually asked if they pretty please want to join a cult or not. Especially when their grandfather runs said cult. Most of her childhood was spent in a kind of plan/escape/punishment cycle that she couldn’t really recommend—but it did give her the qualifying skills.

Plants are blocking part of her window.

Three times in two weeks Rey’s clients can’t locate her tattoo shop because the sign hanging in her window is hidden by greenery from the flower boutique next door. Every time she nudges the stand of pots with flourishing flowers a tad, just enough to get her full window back, the next day she finds it right where it was before.

This can’t keep going on. What is their problem? She needs to give that florist a piece of her mind.

“Hey!”

Confrontation-induced adrenaline has Rey stomping into the florist’s. It drains when she sees the pale man behind the counter delicately arranging a bouquet nearly as striking as him, long fingers positioning stems just so.

He looks at her.

Oh. Hm.
