The castle looms over the peasant humans like an alien mother ship gathering their forced tribute. When the aliens (aristocrats) emerge, as in April, they are giants in weird, elaborate suits. Which is either Julian May's Many Coloured Land or an accurate critique of feudal Europe.
Huge gorgeously dressed figures dwarf the forest and castle.

This beach wheelchair was easier to push. The small wheels are at the back. Great fun.

Oak galls on Hackney Marsh. Right, a knopper (wasp) gall. Left, I've not noticed this one before, they're made by the gorgeously named Silk-button Spangle Gall Wasp (thanks, Seek app). Both wasps produce an autumn generation of parthenogenetic females & then in Spring a sexual generation. Amazing

Neil's first go at waxing leaders on #Warré bars. Comb wax from past seasons (foundation free so no pesticides). Bain Marie. A water-soaked guide piece held against the bar. And that vital tool, a cunningly bent teaspoon. And ... voilá! #beekeeping
Close shot of hands above a pan of liquid beeswax on a scruffy workbench. In the left hand, a narrow wooden piece 30cm long. Right hand holds a teaspoon with handle bent at right angle, dribbling wax onto wood.Hands have separated wood into 2 bars. One has an uneven strip of wax projecting from its surface Longer shot of smiling man holding the 2 bars . He's dressed in workshop clothes & looks very pleasant.

The apples went down well, so here are some Charles Ross from the garden. You can feed a household on one. Early cropper, doesn't keep but delicious for quick eating/cooking/juicing. 19th-c Cox/Peasgood cross by a Berkshire gent's gardener, & I raise my glass to Mr Ross.
3 large plump apples, the skin a greenish-yellow base flushed with orange & streaked with broken red lines

Who wants to see some apples? Proudly harvested on our allotment today. Varieties are (I think): pic 1, back, Red Windsor, front left Sunset, right Red Falstaff; pic2, left Kidd's Orange Red, right Karmijn de Sonnaville.
Apples on a wooden surface, in 3 groups of different sizes and colourings. Small red at the back, medium sized streaked red, yellow and green at front left, and front right large yellow/green.Apples on a wooden surface. The 4 on the left are medium sized and streaked red/green; the 2 on the right are larger and streaked green/yellow

In Alnwick for family so I rolled round to Barter Books, completely #wheelchair-able & always comes up with treasure, this time the 1941 edn of comic classic No Bed For Bacon. I lent & lost my nice Hogarth reprint to a friend who died last month so maybe her apologetic spirit put it there.
