I’ve been thinking a lot about the shifting baseline concept as applied to everyday life. People in their 20’s now have no memory of highly functional systems, products (from blenders to sweaters) that were so well made you could hand them down across generations, or even helpful customer service.

California's miserable snow season, and the rapid decline (black line) in snow water equivalent from the recent unprecedented heat wave in the west. This is #climatechange and the long predicted impacts of rising temperatures.
Graph from USDA of snow water equivalent in California from the beginning of the water year (October) over the year, showing the maximum, minimum, median amounts of SWE and the 2026 values, plunging to 20% of normal for late March, very close to the minimum.

In the age of AI paper writing, when I catch a few incorrect sentence structures of mis-conjugated verbs, it kind of warms my heart. The things that used to drive me insane now serve as little assurances of students' humanity.

I am not a super fan of AI by any means but two things I love: copy and paste formatted citation and it will make you a bibtex entry, make a picture of any data table into a .csv file in seconds.

How does lava sound when it comes to the surface of the Earth? Listen to a lava flow oozing out of its effusive vent high on the southwestern side of #Etna, 28 August 2025. That day no visits by tourists were allowed on the site, which permitted this (relatively) clean recording

thanks @globalstewards.bsky.social I finally got in touch with someone - very random, I filled out a scathing review to UPS when they sent me a generic "can we please have your feedback" email from a separate, domestic package. They called me and they are working on it. Thanks for the suggestions.

The fact that R constantly is changing its geospatial packages and you are constantly having to relearn the same task in a new package with slight tweaks. I don't know if "real" GIS people even use R? It just integrates easily into my other analyses.

UPS effectively has no way to contact them (waiting on phone for ~45 minutes to talk to someone who just gives me the number of the contractor there...who has created this problem) and a broken "help" link on UPS website. Anyone ever dealt with this.

Cue me trotting out the stats again: over 300,000 people work in US libraries. We are in every state. Coal mining, by contrast, employs less than 50,000 people across a few states. Politicians don't promote libraries because nobody gets rich off owning them but we are everywhere.

SE Minnesota has a lot of agriculture (livestock & corn are the main culprits) as well as a lot of karst. That is a TERRIBLE combination for water quality. Livestock generates manure. Corn requires a lot of fertilizer. Both manure & fertilizer are overapplied, causing massive water quality issues.

#1: cut off ~2 feet of casing during construction of a new building and lowering of grade nearby (and closing off access to wells for 5 years) #2: There are known artesian conditions in the area :) I had not had access to these wells during the construction. Thanks!

Thank you, @tempest! I should have clarified, this is for my class, historically, we do all of the above! I have historic data for constant Q and step drawdown pump tests as well as slug tests. We will be running tests this spring, but this is the first time I have encountered artesian conditions.

It is 2" PVC unconsolidated sediments screened over 10ft in gravelly sand and sand, interbedded sandy and confining units above. TD = 78 ft. K = 38 ft per day approx. I have a ~3" OD pump that we put down a similar 4" well ~10 feet away, so we can run pump tests. Just not so sure of slug test.
