Universities are tearing apart the humanities, arts and social sciences. Courses are closing, jobs are disappearing, and students and staff are paying the price. At Exeter, 85% of proposed job cuts targeted these disciplines. We need university leaders who will defend education mot destroy it.

Hard to process the loss of Chris Wickham. A true intellectual 'gentle giant' - if one can put it like that - who wore his astonishing breadth and depth of learning so lightly. It was a real privilege to be taught the Medieval Historiography course by him during my M.St. I will really cherish (1/6)

Chris Wickham was endlessly curious, he was a life-long learner of languages, methods, problem. An important British interlocutor with _Annales_ history-making and expositor of the Marxist historical tradition. Always humane and engaged. A loss not only to his loved ones, but to all historians.

Few historians have done for the Middle Ages what Chris Wickham did. As an Italian, I feel fortunate that he made Italy a central field of his inquiry. Italian medieval history is richer for it. His work will continue shaping the field. Meanwhile, he will be missed.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I have some 20 000 words in JMH. Historical Research took a piece of mine of ca 13 000 words. Social History (Taylor and Francis, not OUP) took 16 000 although they have a lower limit in their instructions for authors. Always worth asking editors how strict the limits are.
