There’s that famous BBC balanced coverage, showing all sides of the story so readers can make an informed judgement.
A screenshot of the BBC news app. At the top is a live section showing a picture of the inside of a prison. The headline reads “New prisoner early release scheme begins as probation officer warns 'I've no idea how we'll cope'”, and the subheading “Around 700 prisoners are expected to be released from prison early in England and Wales under the first tranche of the early release scheme.”

Underneath it, the second article had a picture of a woman looking concerned. The headline reads “We fear for our lives after being told our abusive exes will be freed from jail early”.

Another unrelated article is also visible.

Is it just me, or does the recent flurry of “AI escaping confinement and committing serious crimes” stories smack less of super intelligence and more of “we vibe-coded our sandboxes”? If I made software that hacked something, I’d be in prison right now. But the AI CEOs seem rather Teflon on this.

Tell me you grew up in a family of five without telling me you grew up in a family of five… Istg I’m literally incapable of cooking small amounts of food. This was meant to be four portions of lasagna. I made ten. I guess lunch and dinner—and let’s face it, breakfast—are sorted for the week.
Two deep oven trays, one larger and one smaller, both containing lasagna. The larger has two portions taken from it already. Two spatulas are resting on the side.

I was really proud to be volunteering at the #GreatNorthRun today. Deployed to the last 800 metres, I had a great perspective of the final dash to the finish line. Well done to everyone who participated today, and especially thank you to my fantastic team of fellow volunteers; I’m proud of you all.
Me sat in the front of an ambulance vehicle in St John Ambulance uniform, smiling. I have a radio on each shoulder, and am wearing a role bar which reads “Treatment Centre Manager”.

Dolly Parton leaves in her wake a legacy of unconditional benevolence, kindness, and compassion. Her death is more than the loss of an icon; it is the loss of the kind of role model we so desperately need at the moment. Rest in peace, ma'am.

A couple more snaps from the #eclipse yesterday. Would we call this a “fire rainbow”? I’m not sure, but either way it was very pretty! 🌈

Using some very rough maths, I reckon that billionaires account for approximately ~0.0000413% of the human population on Earth. Yet between them, they hoard ~13.4% of the world’s money ($20.1 trillion). Think about that the next time one of these whiny twats complains about having to pay tax.

People on the “call a general election because Andy Burnham is further left than the country voted for” bandwagon would do well to remember that Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak were all further right than the country voted for in 2017. If you don't like the system, campaign to change it.

Congratulations to Andy Burnham. As a nation, we now find ourselves at an era-defining crossroads. If Burnham's all but inevitable premiership champions electoral reform (small ‘r’), we might just manage to cease our dissent into Reform (big ‘r’)'s divisive rhetoric. That “if”, though, is immense.

We need to stop using the terms “left” and “right” in political discourse. They're overly simplistic, and they very neatly sanitise bad behaviour. I'd argue that a 3D spectrum along evidential/emotional, inclusive/exclusive, and libertarian/authoritarian axes would be a far more useful tool today.

@bsky.app why are the trending feeds getting noticeably worse? Currently the ”Makerfield Election“ feed is, I reckon, less than 1/3 content which has anything at all to do with the Makerfield by-election. It's mostly football and Nigel-bloody-Farage. Quite an important thing to get right, no?

I think Keir Starmer's spiel on supporting young people pursuing apprenticeships is great; of course it is! But let's not forget those young people for whom higher education is their best route to success and prosperity. Universities are on their knees across the country! Two things can be true.

I’m really struggling for optimism today, I must admit. Sure, +28 Green councillors (so far) is a good thing, but in the face of +402 Reform councillors (so far), I’m reluctant to celebrate in any meaningful way. Reform is a party of thinly veiled racism, for thinly veiled racists. Remember that.

Hear, hear! Just consider for a second the logic at play here. “We can’t possibly make the system more democratic; then people would be able to vote how they actually want, meaning we’d be out of a job.” Good! Do a better job, then maybe the electorate won’t vote you out.

“Woke” is an ideal, a badge of honour to wear with pride. If you ever find yourself using “woke” in a derogatory way, ask yourself “why do I have a problem with people being aware of social problems such as racism and inequality?” The answer, on reflection, may be “because I’m a piece of shit.” 💩

Greens: “here’s why you should vote for us.” Labour: “here’s why you shouldn’t vote for the Greens.” The contrast is clear, vote for your @greenparty.org.uk candidates on Thursday. #VoteGreen #HopeNotHate
A Green Party election leaflet for Newcastle City Council, titled "Your Voice Matters: Vote Green." It features headshots of three candidates: Jamie Driscoll, Kiran Sayyed, and Gareth Jones.
The leaflet highlights three key priorities in rounded boxes:
• Cleaner streets and green spaces.
• Secure and safe transport and parking.
• A city council that treats everyone fairly.
At the bottom left, an illustration shows three ballot boxes marked with an 'X' next to each candidate's name. To the right, a bar chart titled "Projected result - Newcastle Council" shows the Green Party leading at 30%, followed by Labour (21%), Reform (19%), and Conservatives (17%). A calendar icon in the corner marks the election date as May 7.A political campaign leaflet on a marble surface, questioning the loyalty of a Green Party candidate. The headline reads, "Is your Monument Green Party candidate working for you, or for himself?"
The left side features a timeline from April 2024 to December 2025, detailing Jamie Driscoll's shifts from an Independent to forming the "Majority" party, then "Your Party," before finally joining the Green Party. The bottom asks, "What will his next bandwagon be?" To the right is a dark silhouette of a man and four different colored election rosettes (grey, purple, gold, and green).
