Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

I am very happy to share my article about #tardigrades from the latest issue of the #Minnesota Conservation Volunteer. It is a pretty personal piece and talks about the my journey into tardigrade hunting (and the amazing mentorship I was fortunate to have along the way).

I am quite stoked that I have a new article in the #Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, and this one is somewhat personal. In it, I talk about my journey as an amateur #tardigrade hunter (I call it the tardigrade rodeo) and the generous mentorship I have encountered along the way.

Enjoy this article from a Minnesota newspaper in 1882 noting that Scandinavians love their home countries so much that it will take them generations to assimilate into America. www.loc.gov/resource/sn8...
SCANDINAVIANS
No people on earth, probably excel the Scandinavians, and scarcely any equal them, unless it may be the Swiss mountaineers, in attachment to their native country. The Scandinavian emigrant
brings with him to this country, not only his love of home, but his attachments to customs and habits of his old home. So
strong is this passion that it is hard for him to assimilate to the customs of his new home, and to conform to the ideas of American citizenship, but he remains in his adopted land, a foreigner, in all that pertains to his modes, manners, habits,
likes and dislikes. This peculiar habit of our Scandinavian fellow citizens, and this strong, over-mastering attachment to their native land, has not been generally known and appreciated by our own citizens, "to the manor born."
It will take several generations to wear away this foster land attachment, and to assimilate the Scandinavian emigrant, and
absorb him into the language, habits, customs and true idea of a homogeneous American citizenship.

I made an UNBELIEVABLE discovery while hunting for Tardigrades. Wow! #tardigrades #checkthedate
Tardigrades Eagerly Await the Great Nematode Migration

In an almost unbelievable scene reminiscent of the famous salmon runs of the American West, where Brown Bears wait for an unsuspecting meal to leap into their mouths, I discovered something incredible last night while peering through my microscope. Tardigrades, also known as water bears, also apparently reenact this scene in miniature: Nematodes (aka roundworms) while wiggling and thrashing amid the wild waters of the Petri dish, thrust themselves into the air, and into the waiting claws and stylets of the hungry water bears. Of course, the scale of this natural wonder is minute, which is why it was only discovered recently, on this very April First.

Image features a river rapids scene with two GIANT tardigrades waiting for similarly huge nematodes, which are wiggling out of the water. At the top there are large images of a nematode and a tardigrade.
