My progress capturing The Andromeda Galaxy over the last year (in reverse order). From a single untracked 50mm shot, to tracked with a refractor. It’s been a fun year learning the basics of astrophotography. #Astrophotography #Space
A deep-sky photograph of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) glowing in dark space. The broad spiral galaxy features a bright core surrounded by oval dust lanes and bluish outer spiral arms. Near the top edge of its disk, the small satellite galaxy M32 appears as a bright, compact spot of light. Below the main galaxy, the second satellite galaxy, M110, appears as a smooth, faint oval glow.A wide-field astrophotography image featuring the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) set diagonally across a rich field of background stars. The spiral galaxy shines with a warm, bright core fading into elongated bluish outer arms filled with subtle dust lanes. Below the galaxy’s main disk, the satellite companion M110 appears as an elongated, fuzzy oval glow. Several bright foreground stars with bluish halos punctuate the surrounding space above and to the left of the galaxy. An ultra-wide field astrophotography shot featuring the Andromeda Galaxy centered against a vast black sea of fine starfield. The galaxy appears smaller and more distant in the frame, with a bright white core tapering out into soft, gray-white outer spiral arms. Just below the lower edge of its galactic disk, the faint, smudged oval of its satellite companion M110 is visible among the pinpricks of background stars. An ultra-wide field night sky photograph featuring the Andromeda Galaxy as a small, faint diagonal oval of light at the center of a dense black field filled with thousands of tiny white stars. Towards the bottom center of the frame, faint vertical light streaks from passing satellites or meteor trails slice through the dark background space.

Lots of practice, deconvolution which sharpened up the dust lane, and finally being able to remove the stars during the edit which let me stretch just the galaxy without blowing out the stars. I couldn’t get StarNet to cooperate the first time, so I had to stretch the galaxy and stars together.

The Sombrero Galaxy (M104). One of my favorites in the universe. I originally took this in April but lacked the editing skills to finish it. #Astrophotography #Astronomy #Space
A deep-sky astrophotograph captures the Sombrero Galaxy (M104) centered in a vast, dark starfield. The galaxy appears as a brilliant white nucleus encircled by a flat, glowing disk that is sharply bisected by a prominent dark dust lane, giving it its iconic hat-like shape. Dozens of stars in shades of blue and gold are scattered across the black void, with several of the brightest foreground stars displaying crisp, four-pointed diffraction spikes.

The Triangulum Galaxy (M33). Shot over a few nights between clouds and wind gusts. #Astrophotography #Astronomy #Space
An astrophotography image of the Triangulum Galaxy (M33) centered against a dense, dark field of countless distant stars. The face-on spiral galaxy appears as a broad, loosely wound oval, glowing with a bright, dense whitish-blue core that fades outward into expansive, mottled spiral arms. These outer arms are rich with delicate, powdery blue star clusters and faint, reddish-pink spots of nebulae (star-forming regions), giving the galaxy a textured, swirling appearance. Starry pinpoints of varying brightness, from tiny speckles to larger, warmer-hued foreground stars, surround the galaxy and speckle the cosmic background.

I’m pretty happy with the results though. It’s my clearest comet photo yet! Stacked in DSS, processed in @siril.org, refined in Affinity. 10 minutes of integration. I got the best results by throwing out about 80% of my data. The sky glow was just too high. Sony a7 IV & Zenithstar 61 II.

Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) This one was a doozy! I am not a morning person and it required a 4am alarm. Although, the moment I stepped outside and could see the Milky Way core, it was worth it. It took me over a week to figure out stacking/processing. #Astrophotography #Space
Vertical astrophotography shot of a comet against a dense field of sharp white stars. The nucleus glows with a bright cyan/teal intensity in the lower-left quadrant, while a long, straight, faint white ion tail stretches diagonally across the frame toward the top right.Vertical astrophotography shot of a comet against a dense field of sharp white stars. Messier 3. A globular cluster containing about 500,000 stars. It doesn’t have a cool “common name” and I find that sad. That means we get to name it, right? Submissions are open until May 8th. I’ll publish the best one in my very unscientific journal. #Astrophotography #Space #Astronomy 🔭
A wide-field astrophotography image of the globular cluster Messier 3. The cluster is a dense, spherical concentration of thousands of stars with a brilliant, glowing white core at the center. Individual stars radiate outward, fading into the deep black of space. The surrounding field contains scattered stars in various colors, some exhibiting thin diffraction spikes.

A test shot of Centaurus A (Caldwell 77). A big, bright, weird galaxy that is usually better suited for southern hemisphere viewing but I’m far enough south here to catch it low in the sky in April/May. #Astrophotography #Space 🔭
A deep-space photograph of the Centaurus A galaxy (NGC 5128) against a dense backdrop of distant stars. The galaxy appears as a glowing, elliptical orb of light bisected by a thick, chaotic dark dust lane that twists across its center. Faint, reddish star-forming regions are visible within the dust, and a subtle, hazy outer halo extends into the dark void of space.

This also pushed my editing skills to their limit. You can expose for the moon, or the clouds, but not both. So, this is a composite of two photos taken back-to-back.

The moon is a fun target to test my new refractor (ZenithStar 61) on while I wait for clearer and darker skies. Just aiming this thing is tricky compared to the ball head I used with my 135mm. #Astrophotography #Photography #Moon
A high-contrast composite photograph of a nearly full moon centered in a dark, atmospheric sky. The moon is sharp and detailed, revealing prominent craters and lunar mares in shades of silver and grey. It is surrounded by a soft, luminous white glow that fades into layers of wispy, dark brown and charcoal clouds. At the very bottom of the frame, a thin line of low-lying, dark blue clouds sits against the black horizon, creating a sense of depth and scale.

The planet is a dreamy pale blue, swirling with white clouds and reflected sunlight. Although Earth only fills a fraction of the image it is the brightest object in the image by far. Last night’s “Pink Moon,” which is apparently just what we call a full moon in April. It wasn’t actually pink, but through the magic of editing I have delivered on the promise. It’s rising over the Rincon Mountains in Tucson. #AstroPhotography #Photography #Moon

The Leo Triplet: M65 M66 NGC 3628 - The Hamburger Galaxy. Look closely and you can see its tidal tail: a trail of stars and gas extending into space as a result of gravitational forces from nearby galaxies. About 5 hours of integration at 135mm. #Astrophotography #Space #Science #SonyAlpha 🔭
A wide-field astrophotography image showing the Leo Triplet galaxies against a vast, dark sky filled with stars. At the top center, the bright blue-white star Chertan (Theta Leonis) shines with prominent X-shaped diffraction spikes. In the lower-center, three distinct galaxies are visible: M65 and M66 appear as glowing, angled spirals, while NGC 3628 (The Hamburger Galaxy) is seen edge-on with a thick dust lane and a very faint, wispy tidal tail stretching into the void.

The Butterfly Galaxies are undergoing a collision event. In just 500 million years, they will become a single galaxy. At the center of the picture is a group of galaxies referred to as Markarian's Chain containing The Eyes, M86, M84, and more.

M100 and M99 are two grand design spiral galaxies and were two of the first spiral galaxies ever observed. M90 is a spiral galaxy that is moving so fast that it should eventually escape the Virgo cluster. In this process, it is losing gas and will eventually become a lenticular galaxy.

There are estimated to be about 2,000 galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Some fun facts: M87 is an absolute unit of an elliptical galaxy. Its supermassive black hole center was photographed by the Event Horizon Telescope a few years ago.
