one thing about the discourse is that it makes it actively impossible for those of us who loved his work & feel betrayed to process our feelings and grieve in private--the appropriate way forward--because you all keep forcing us to defend our right to grieve at all instead of forgiving & forgetting

It honeslty just shows me how much rape culture exists. With James Somerton, we all collectively agreed he didn’t deserve a platform anymore, and he disappeared. I’m sure he’s got some job somewhere, living a life. But an admitted rapist, well, he we must forgive, because some of us liked his stuff.

Seeing a bunch of people bend over backwards to make excuses for this guy should piss you off MORE if you're a member of the "gets excommunicated from support networks because someone felt like your condemnation of sexual assault had insincere vibes" demographic.

Having real rough time in the afk world right now and the fact that the things happening on the screen I use to distract myself from that are discourse over whether rape is bad… Couldn't have kept the "worst post on the website" contest for when I'm not continually skating at the edge of a breakdown

And again, it's just a Vampire Hunter D story. I'm not joking, Hideyuki Kikuchi should have gotten paid for this one, I wouldn't be surprised if someone could point me to a specific book.

It ends on a boss fight that's both horrible CG and a neat puppet/costume, constantly cutting between those two. Lambert is stiff like his spine can't move and he can't act. but he can do backflips.

I really went "Is this a Witcher? Is this a white Blade? No, it's Vampire Hunter D!". It's the kind of cheap that has two of the characters walk onto a green screen to have a shot reverse shot dialogue with nothing behind them. And the coolest costumes and props. Syfy Originals wish to be this.

Watched Beowulf (1999) last night and that's straight up without a question just an unlicensed adaptation of Vampire Hunter D featuring Christopher Lambert as Not Alucard. It's an absolute crime we didn't get an entire series of films (all just as dirt cheap as this one).

To express my personal justice politics: I don't care about punishments for those who do harm. I care about not being in community with those whose actions are the fabric of systemic oppression and about providing safety, community, and material care for victims/survivors.

The number of people failing to understand this distinction and often weaponising such ignorance while claiming to be abolitionist is deeply discouraging as it highlights much of the language of the movement has been coopted by people whose politics are detrimental to it.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 8h
We can argue the merits of various justice systems and their efficacy in preventing crime, preventing recidivism, saving people's souls, social cohesion, outcomes for victims, and all that. But that is separate from the call to address a very specific vector of systemic oppression.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 8h
You can be a prison abolitionist and believe rapists should be hunted on horseback. These two things are not at all incongruous.
120
Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 8h
We don't oppose prisons because we think being forced to face consequences for your actions is bad. You can be a prison abolitionist and still think people should be *punished* for certain actions. You can be an abolitionist and believe in punishments many would see as more harsh or cruel.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 8h
For the record: We oppose prisons because it's bad for the state to have power to limit people's rights, destroy their lives, and often render them into slave labour. We oppose prisons because they give the state an easy way to compound systemic injustices like racism.

You can't expect better. No one will ever hold a man to account. Holding men to account for abusing women is racist and imperialist and colonial and transphobic and even misogynistic, somehow. Isn't forgiveness in your nature, anyway? Aren't you a woman? Isn't this what you're for?

Here, read this bell hooks book where she was clearly struggling to reconcile her own love for men with the fact that her abusers will never be held to account for their actions. Let's build a worldview out of cope because every institution and community and person will side with them over you.

Why can't we love the rapist men? Forgive the rapist men? Don't you know that punishing rapist men won't fix the rape they committed? Don't you know we can't ever have a solitary single consequence for a man who committed rape? Haven't the rapist men who were slapped on the wrist suffered enough?

It's actively insanity inducing to be a survivor and a feminist right now because in the face of the sheer ubiquity of sexual assault and the lack of consequences for it, we're all being besieged by demands that we think of the rapist men, forgive the rapist men, cleanse the souls of the rapist men

Are you defined by your worst moments and choices forever and ever? No. You can work to be better. But part of that work has to involve never being in a position of trust you could abuse after you have shown that you are willing to abuse it, and that's plainly necessary with rapists as well.

This is actually really insightful because like-- I think fascists, cops, soldiers, snitches can all choose to be better. But I think it is widely understood that people who have done those things should not be trusted with power again; removing that is a necessary part of being safe around them.

Also just... if she's fine with him going on to have a lucrative career and we go "nah" that's fine, a rapist lost a career Now consider the inverse. Please.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 21h
I'm gonna be explicit here - the woman Geller raped could come out and say she believes he's fine actually and you should click like and subscribe and I wouldn't. Because I don't think that's how navigating harm in a social context works. And hiding behind the idea that it does feels exploitative.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 21h
and we do in fact get to decide what that means. Other victims and survivors of rape get to speak up, and everyone else gets to decide who they value being in community with more - the victims or their rapists.

Daniel Jenna Grouse @grouse.ing · 21h
Here's a thing I'm gonna say. No matter how much you hide behind an anonymous woman you haven't taken a moment to imagine as a human and who in this discussion exists purely as a figure to rhetorically exploited further by her rapist to minimise his own actions, we do in fact live in a society

Some of you will insist that if you don't believe in prisons you have to be willing to be friends with and venerate those who aren't even done pulling the knife from in between your ribs. Showcasing just how little you listen or care, betraying the shallow self serving nature of your politics.
