Caring is something that matters. Just like everything else matters. Caring matters a lot more than most things though

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I love this thought. If you're looking for more ego death but it's really cool and normal because wanting to be known forever is kind of like fighting the river endlessly when it's so much more freeing to ride the waves and do good, check out this song by the great Theo Katzman youtu.be/4xsfOuLM2J8

amit majmudar VOCATIVE
VOCATIVE

English is my native anguish.
I was born here, read here, teased and torn here,

Vocative, ablative,
locative, alive: English was a dislocation navigating oceans, Wherever it arrived,
it broke and brokered words.

its little bits of Britain pilfered, bartered, written, looted, hoarded, heard.

Papa swapped a world for shiny colored beads, for dandelion seeds. We are subject verbs.

The root word of my name hooks a foreign land, long-since-shifted sand books cannot reclaim.

Graft of tongue, gift of dust, mother and stranger, sing the kedgeree, the everything at once you've made of us.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Mainstream media is obsessed with the misery of the fall and the struggle of the rise, but not with celebrations of recovery, with what community feels like, how and it feels to do work on yourself when it's working and people notice. Consider if you are thinking enough about a utopia? What is it?

Thinking about the surf Dracula tweet today re: s4 of the Bear. The show spent all this time on the misery of community, the broken family, the buried grief manifesting as endless service. Then it all gets better mostly off camera and it's not that clear if Carmen is cooking anymore??!
A tweet from @topherflorence:

back in the day, if u did a TV show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire first season got to be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the finale

INSTEAD OF DEPRESSION

try calling it hibernation.
Imagine the darkness is a cave
in which you will be nurtured
by doing absolutely nothing.
Hibernating animals don't even dream.
It's okay if you can't imagine
spring. Sleep through the alarm
of the world. Name your hopelessness
a quiet hollow, a place you go
to heal, a den you dug,
Sweetheart, instead
of a grave.

Rest in peace, Wendell Berry.
The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

The world can be harsh and unforgiving. As we move into an uncertain future where the planet may no longer support life as it did before, art like this can remind us of the true spirit of giving that is in our hearts. I agree with Mr W here though. The key to this one is the mind of the giver.

One of the great problems of both the really curious and really incurious (both sides of the spectrum) is finding it hard to listen. Curious minds want to converse, and the incurious don't care to be told anything really. Listening and not going off feels bad, but risking boredom does too!

Theory of hard cardio (in beta). Before the misery starts, one's head can either be helped to be empty through meditation and breathing, or full through something like writing down a list of all the stuff bothering you. Empty up if there's a lot going on. Fill it if you need a kick in the pants.

If you need a comeback if someone mentions the uselessness of the study of history, ask them if they just mean war history. Do you think they had the DMV in 1400? Among many other things this is a good illustration of the necessity of untethering ideology and "fight" in intra-Democratic battles. The party is very united on fight, very divided on ideology. You unite on fight, let different constituencies/states find their center of gravity on ideology.
