It's actually a good thing I lost a lot of friends to a much smaller ask than what my life now requires. I know exactly how low their threshold for discomfort is and it's EMBARRASSINGLY low even when the stakes are high. Couldn't hang then, absolutely could not hang now.

Remembered a chain restaurant experience. Vegetarian menu by request only. Asked for no cheese. Server delivered cheese-covered food and RAN AWAY. Avoided my waving and attempts at eye contact for twenty minutes. Her eventual answer was "you didn't ask for the VEGAN menu". There was no vegan menu.
