I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Fandoms reacting to mergers, layoffs, and other disruptions in the entertainment industry solely through the lens of how it affects or benefits their particular favorite IP always make me furious. I get the impulse, but it has real “how was the play Mrs. Lincoln” energy.

New Google Maps images reveal massive scale of devastation in Gaza
Satellite imagery shows further destruction of homes, businesses and places of worship since fragile ceasefire An update to Google Maps has revealed the extent of devastation during the three-year Gaza war and the severity of the continuing humanitarian crisis faced by the territory’s 2.3 million inhabitants. The images were taken in June this year and show further destruction of homes, businesses, places of worship and infrastructure since a fragile ceasefire came into effect almost 12 months ago. i find tc fans' reception to the DIGGER reviews/box-office projections to be so interesting. 'for the arts, not the charts' and the film has mixed-to-negative reviews; 'he's the last movie star, people wanna see his films' and people don't wanna see his latest

The older I get, the more clear it is that all our safety and well-being is intertwined. The same forces pushing racism are targeting trans people and immiserating the disabled and extracting everything they can from all of us. We gotta stand up for everyone because everyone is all of us.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.

Every time I call out men who clearly hate women, someone says "you're being too hard on them." Never, throughout the history of time, have we been hard enough on men who hate women. That's literally the problem.

Everything has always been political. A person that has the privilege of never being a direct recipient of policies that enact violence/discourage a true quality of life, especially for its most vulnerable citizens, will always be the first person to ask “why are you making everything political?”
