Chameleon, from the Greek χαμαί ‘on the earth’ and λέων ‘lion’, was calqued from Akkadian nēš(u ša) qaqqari lit. ‘lion of the ground’, a figure attested in the Epic of Gilgamesh (line 314 ᴜʀ.ᴍᴀʜ šá qaq‐qa‐ri). The term is paralleled in lexical tablets from Ebla (ca. 2300 BCE) as na‐iš qar‐qá‐rí‐m.

64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

What infuriates me the most is that OMB chair's daughter survived CF because of NIH funded research.. Yet he moves full steam ahead to gut that institution. Destroying the institution his family benefitted from.

A study using PET brain scans found people with Long COVID had significantly lower levels of VMAT2, a protein involved in dopamine signalling, compared with healthy people. Reductions of 16–20% were found in brain regions involved in motivation, movement, memory, planning and apathy.

Reminder that the annual budget for the DoD is $1 trillion while the budget for NIH is less than $50 billion. The DoD doesn't need to be taking money from the NIH. This is all about defunding the NIH.
