American and Canadians are truly brothers.

The SF political imaginary can be described as the Culture versus a melange of right-wing influences. Banks is incredibly underweighted in understanding the AI scene’s political imagination.

I should really book a route on one of these soon.

Woke I was mostly waged within liberal institutions and unfortunately I don’t think it left them in a better place.

NYC rent control rules and the city’s size and history have cultivated a multi-generational set of natives whose interests are distinct from the transplants. No surprise there’s discourse and politics around this, particularly as rent goes up and units become scarce.

Objective control is flawed but a bunch of people want to recklessly break that seal without any sense of where this all could go.

Traditional “trust & safety” has a spectacularly poor record and is poorly suited to AI so it’s funny to see them being propped up as the reasonable champions here.

You joke but this is pretty obviously the goal of a decent number of the model welfare types.

Disentangling from the US is expensive and the behavior of these countries don’t suggest they believe there’s a high chance the US takes military action against them, so I expect economic hedging while security activity is mostly about building up parallel but not independent capabilities.

Nobody is happy or has any good options in light of all the bullshit, but all sure can post about it.

The Canada-US discourse on this site is uniquely rancid and mostly revolves around arguments about whether Trump represents the “real” US.

Okay we get it the US is not reliable now. You’ve been tweeting the same thing for two whole years! Could we at least have a conversation about what that means that goes beyond flagellation?

It all optimizes for “how can I eat delicious food in a countercultural way.” The sauerkraut thing seems distinctly limited compared to the all beef diets.

My one disagreement is that AI companies giving control over social science to independent panels would buy social legitimacy. We've seen that social legitimacy, as a thing, is in decline and that AI lab adversaries are unlikely to credit them or the research because its independent.

Google Books is funny to me because we go in endless loops over whether it can/should be made freely available after Google tried and lost in court.

Academia is simultaneously incapable of rewarding teaching the classics or allowing others to build art on them. Apparently the primary role of the classics is as objects of critique to justify tenure placement?

rotating median voters in my brain

I like DeSantis. One thing that I do appreciate is that he is trying to do away with property taxes. I mean, I think he has a very good point. You pay your house off, you have the deed and it’s free and clear; you should not have to keep paying the government.

Too many people on this site are betting on a thermostatic backlash to deliver political salvation when that the polls suggest it may not happen!

You really cannot be posting about the consequences of your own administration's actions like it just happened; the "middle power" pivot is on your heads!

The recurring flare-ups around Yglesias arise from the fact that nobody has put forward a ideologically satisfying and results-backed theory of how to regularly win elections and build left-of-center legislative power today rather than just relying on thermostatic backlash to get thin majorities.

Btw stuff like this is why precision munitions are expensive and the US pays so much for them. It’s actually really hard to get large warheads on target at long ranges.

This has left the AI debate as ground mostly for tech liberals and the tech right while much of academia and civil society has excluded itself as a result of friend-enemy politics with tech. It’s left plenty of room for non-traditional groups like EAs to gather influence. Up to you if that’s good.

Lander's great, Chevalier's a really nasty piece of work, Valdez seems about median DSA. Mixed bag all round, and I wouldn't take any of it as particularly representative of the party or the country as a whole.

We're genuinely going back to the Biden 2023-24 set of policies for AI evaluation. As in this is literally what the old executive order wanted CAISI to do.

We really need a good operational history of the Ukraine war. At this point, I think you could write a "first draft" of its history from 2022 to the failed counteroffensive in Summer 2023. The best I've seen are RUSI's reports, which are necessarily incomplete and a few years old for this period.

I don't think these reforms will change much because: 1) This phenomenon is a result of our political system prioritizing individual electeds, and it's not clear how to overcome that or if we should want to. 2) Many of the errors in this piece were decisions of elected officials, not their staff.

This is why I don't expect the MOU to actually be honored in the breach; many of the conditions are simply too much for the US to stomach and, for better or worse, they can back out and effectively dare Iran to restart the blockade on Hormuz.

I am skeptical that the development of a professional civil service to manage foreign policy for Democrats can be reconciled with the weak party system of the US and the incentives of US politicians to elevate loyal aides instead of supporting the formation of an alternative power base.

Total destruction of the state’s fiscal capacity to buy off interest groups so they’ll support you is, historically, a sign of state collapse.

I worry the arts writ large are trending this way under the pressure of increasing costs and viewers scrolling short-form video instead of paying for content.

US customers wouldn't buy them, and until recently EVs were not the "cheap" option as compared to ICs. What is remarkable about the current Chinese EVs is that they've pushed costs so low and gotten battery reliability so high. The quality differences, particularly in software, build on this.

Let's just be a bit more explicit here; a major issue is that a lot of Dem natsec types come from State and not DoD and don't understand that this matters.

I find much to like in this essay and the approach to technology and national security from Sullivan, which makes it all the more tragic that this (and so much else) was effectively plowed under by Biden's Israel policy. www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state...

In (partial) defense of liberal natsec types here, the pre-2016 status quo embedded a lot of what they sought and it’s understandable why the foreign policy intellectual class has so much trouble moving beyond it. But 2016 is gone and it’s time for some hard ideological evolution.

Obvious that Ross would never accept his political project being subject to the same restrictions imposed on the Hungarian opposition and is just engaging in motivated reasoning here.

I interpret that comment as performance; I don't think Vance believes the UFOs are demons, I think he thinks it's funny to say that to "troll" and that he thinks there are some idiots he can simultaneously capture with the comment.

Hot take is that this has historically been the right move and “no first use” would have been wrong for the US to adopt.

So much AI discourse is by people who don’t use AI, don’t understand AI, and are convinced what they read in 2023 is the eternal truth about LLMs. Sorry but the left is going to be left behind if it can’t move beyond declaring AI both useless and a scam.
