Just a little grey duck in a big grey world. He/him. (Not to be mistaken for ho/hum.) If I have a "main topic" it's the game #Satisfactory. My main textual output is (or should be, if I'm behaving myself) over at my not-a-blog: greyduck.net

This! Which tells me, personally, that if they truly believe that its OK to make a sentient being that they enslave, well, they probably think it's ok to do that to humans.

A friend has Covid right now. They have lost their sense of smell and they're having cognitive problems. This hit me today, as it often does: we made, and continue to make, a huge collective mistake in allowing a virus that impacts the brain to transmit unmitigated globally.

I have an Agent Carter t-shirt. Everyone thinks it's a Carmen Sandiego shirt, which tells you how well Agent Carter stuck in cultural memory.

I dare you to tell me that The Labyrinth (the one with David Bowie) doesn't still hold up as the best of the entire isekai genre

Some of the best bits are ones where you can tell someone somehow both put WAY too much thought into their response and also EXACTLY the right amount of thought into their response.

Sometimes you say it twice for emphasis, sometimes you say it twice because you're so groggy you can't be sure you'd said it already that morning, amirite? [weary fistbump of solidarity]

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I don't know if it's a metaphor for our times, but it's certainly *something*.

I truly believe that @yattatachi.com, @animefeminist.com, @okazu.yuricon.com, & @animeherald.com are still around because of spite, determination, sweat & tears, & the power of their communities. They continue to brave the storm. I hope more folks will discover them & help strengthen them.

Here's one for the X-Files fans in the audience. I took advantage of a rock-clearing failure in tonight's solo #Satisfactory session to throw a quick meme image together...
Satisfactory video game screenshot w/ text overlay in "meme" form: Pioneer stands in a pose of pure frustration, hands to helmet, because a rock was not removed via explosive charge detonation and is instead hanging in the air in, as Douglas Adams once put it, "exactly the way that bricks don't." Overlaid text reads, "I want to be... rid of this rock!" The composition is an homage to the famous X-Files TV show "I Want To Believe" poster.

Deep sigh. Most of these guys we've been able to say "Well he was crap, but at least he did [this one good thing]." Impossible, with this guy. It's never happened and never will.

I dunno man, it's kind of unsettling to see rampant gushing and uncritical praise for the new Gears of War game while the people who made it are literally being laid off. The very least you could do is mention the layoffs

1) He was on KINK? Whose bright idea was *that*? 2) They've revived KUFO? Huh. (You can tell how long it's been since I turned on a radio in this city.)

Sometimes! The [everything] around said character has to be good enough that you're willing to fill in the details yourself though. FE: Engage couldn't pull it off very well, for instance. (Sadly.)

Being surprised by new sounds and ideas is for... eh, I can't even commit to this bit enough to think of an clever insult, I'm just *so tired*, man. A baffling angle: Have none of these dinguses realized that a big part of popular music involves the cults of personality? Which requires PERSONS?

Tonight was Massive Undertakings Night. Spud's still putting together the various things we'll need to have a safe & steady nuclear power operation, I'm partway through placing 160 refineries to make just one item, and Nyx? She's building a late-game factory from base ore. Huge project!
Satisfactory video game screenshot: Three exhausted Pioneers perched high above the swamp. In the background is part of a sprawling huge factory. It's night, and a ringed gas giant planet dominates the sky.

I mean, one could argue that writing things down was a mistake. Though "Everything we write down will be stolen by machines and used against us" is looking *way* down the timeline. Extreme prescience.

From the first info we got about the game I had an eyeroll-y "ugh, oh no" reaction to Cai, but now that I'm several chapters in on Leda's story... you know what, no, this game really needs the bright-eyed youngster route & perspective. I've done a complete 180 on this and will probably run him next.

Yeeeah. There were two announcements I've been waiting on today, this and the Satisfactory DLC/expansion/whatever, and one of those delivered on time. Shouldn't be surprised that Tapas' owners have fumbled this, I suppose.

Deep in my YouTube viewing history is the video from which I picked up the phrase "The Next-Word-Guessing Machine" months and months ago and nothing I've seen about the state of the technology since has convinced me that any of these LLMs are anything *but* next-word-guessing machines.

"Onegai Muscle" is absolute proof that you can make *any* premise entertaining if you put in the effort to make sure the jokes land and the characters enjoyable and the situation grounded in some fashion (even if the rest of it is totally bonkers).

It's been a slow music-buying year for me and neither of these I love front-to-back, but someone pointed me at Scarlet Dorn a while back and her Lack of Light record landed right in my strike zone. Also, the latest A23 album, Null, got played on repeat for a month or so after it released last year.
