Self-reinvention is a way to stay young, as long as you can remember what you were. I recall being an author, journalist, photographer, truffle grower, climate change writer, magazine editor and publisher, but who can be sure? Born at 313ppm

In the days when all we had was hissing BBC Radio on long wave and I was knee-high to a small Highland cow, I remember listening to a Home Service dramatisation of (IIRC) Alan Garner's The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, and being both enraptured and terrified by the spooky atmosphere it evoked.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A small human (3?) is skipping along next to Dad while holding a threadbare plushie bunny. With utmost solemnity he says: "Dad I REALLY think you should carry me." Dad says: "Why'd ya think that mate?" "Cos Rabbit's got VERY TIRED legs."

In other words, you need to provide some historical and political context before taking these views as representative of some wider group. In my neck of the woods, there was support of Groundswell from a narrow section of the rural community, but not from the community as a whole.

Alan Gibbs bought Rodney Hide and turned ACT from being a self-professed "smart green" party to outright climate denialism. As we've recently seen In Hager's Dirty Work, Groundswell was weaponised by the Taxpayer's Onion, and co-opted into the racist anti-Three Waters campaign.

The research was conducted during and after the Groundswell campaign, and limited itself to an analysis of the views amongst a small pastoral community in the SI. In so far as it goes, it is a useful "peek under the hood" of the thinking of that small community, but IMHO could have acknowledged...

Precisely this. In the Hurunui, once you get off the state highways, the roads quickly become unsealed and almost third world. Sealing much of the rural roading network nationwide would open up huge tourism and other opportunities, as well as saving a lot of car washing.
