This might be one of the best analogies I’ve ever read. From @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social
Was Hegseth’s speech humiliating for whatever is left of America’s international prestige? Certainly. Was it a big joke? Well, perhaps it was, in the same sense that it is darkly funny that John Wayne Gacy performed as a clown in addition to being a serial killer. It would be a mistake not to recognize that whatever humor can be found in the situation is overpowered by its enormous quantity of darkness.

It’s a good thing when a bunch of the stocks you follow for your pathetically small retirement account all hit their 52-week lows when the market opens, right? Line go…oh no. Line go down. *also yes I consider myself lucky that I even have a retirement account.
A screenshot showing notifications that a bunch of stocks hit their 52-week lows. Because the “businessman president” is so good at business.

If you don’t understand why everyone has an OnlyFans or gambles on sports or is trying to be an influencer or trying to get on Celebrity Berates Me-type tv shows, it’s because “real jobs” don’t pay enough to survive anymore. And they suck more than they ever have. So, why would you bother?

Happy Labor Day! www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/capital-is...
My point, my very unoriginal point, is that you will do your own thinking and your own political outlook a great favor by seeing America as a power struggle between capital and labor, which capital has been winning for the past half century, than by thinking of it as a bunch of discrete issues that you can pick and choose from in order to create your own personal political menu suited to your exact tastes. Unfortunately all that shit doesn’t matter. The story of America is that increasingly powerful corporations are organizing all aspects of our world in order to maximize corporate power. Other things that happen are a result of, or a side effect of, or an obstacle to that. Even oligarchy itself is just the human winners of this dynamic living out their human nature while a vast and dangerous amount of capital flows into their own hands. We need to tax the rich, yes, but the real political project is to take power away from capital, period. Everything from reforming labor law to increasing union density to regulating corporate behavior to campaign finance reform to Medicare for All to Social Security to tax policy to AI policy to immigration policy is a part of this larger goal. Each separate issue is a small contested battle in the bigger war over whether we will allow capitalist logic to organize our nation, or whether we will allow human logic to do so. I hate that 80 years of red-baiting combined with academia’s poor communication skills have conspired to make people think that all of this is some sort of weird ideological debate remote from their own lives.

Oh look. The Pedophile Protection Party is setting up its own child trafficking ring. open.substack.com/pub/aaronrup...
But given that Republicans have been very public about protecting pedophiles and denying justice to survivors, it would seem fairly simple to drive the narrative that the Epstein Regime is trying to fast track a way to torture and traffic immigrant kids by doing away with the experienced lawyers who have long represented them.

Without saying your age what is your favorite movie from the year you turned 18? There were so many incredible movies from that year, an insane amount. This one actually thawed my cold, cynical teenage heart for a few minutes when I saw it.
The original lobby poster for the movie Big Fish. The giant stands across a country road from the main character. Vibrant green grass and lush trees line the sides of the road.

I launched my new website last week and neglected to tell you about it. For that I am very sorry. The good thing is, it’s still there! You can go see it right now! It has info on #editing and #marketing services I offer, and stuff about my background. And photos like this! gregdoes.work #writing
A full-color photo shows Greg leaning in and smelling a dark pink lilac blossom. His eyes are closed and he has a slight, pleasant smile on his face. Above the photo, it reads, “But what am I really like?” Text below the photo explains what Greg is really like. You’ll have to go to gregdoes.work to find out what it says. It will be worth your time.

You’ve been murdered. Who do you want on the case?
A still frame of actress CCH Pounder in her role on The Shield. She looks askance at another character. She’s seated at a desk wearing a pinstripe suit and wide-collared white button-down underneath. Her hair is in tight rows and tied up in a bun. The rows are dyed red.

Ever read a book or watch a movie thinking it’ll be a light, fun little thing? But then you get into it and turns out it’s actually quite deep and has a message and gets into some things? The movie Man of the Year with Robin Williams was like that for me, and so was this book. 1/
The cover art for the book, “Zero Stars, Do
Not Recommend,” by MJ Wassmer. It is an illustration of a man sitting on an inflatable pool ring in a pool, looking at his phone. It has the tagline, “A very apocalyptic vacation,” on it, which I don’t love. But also I have no idea how I’d categorize or market this book, so I shouldn’t criticize.

Whew. Finally getting around to posting about #StokerCon. Came back last week and had to immediately jump into a last minute project AND finish the work for my last class for my University of Chicago Editing Certificate. But now both are done and I can breathe a little. Look at all these books!
A stack of horror novels, and commemorative coin, a bloody bookmark, and a business card with an illustration of a bird sit on top of a lovely floral print comforter in a bedroom, because who doesn’t love a good silly juxtaposition. The novels are:

The only marketing strategy anyone needs for the foreseeable future unless you have tens of millions in media budget. And even then, you’re probably still better off spending those millions elsewhere and using this strategy. From @garbageday.email
A still frame from a Panic World episode. The frame reads “This Stuff Sucks!” and Ryan Broderick is showing it off with fancy jazz hands. The caption reads “The Global MrBeast Knockoff Industrial Complex. The quoted text from the newsletter reads, “We’ve finally settled on a video strategy lol. After months of experimenting with, and reporting on, different kinds of short-form video, we’ve decided that the game is totally rigged. So we’re just going to do what Garbage Day does best: Focusing, very selfishly, on what we actually like doing.”

This belief that only certain people deserve to have money is as old as money and is the foundation of the true class warfare waged by the haves against the rest of us. open.substack.com/pub/aaronrup...
Trump wants you poor and supine

The reason Trump chooses cheating rather than actual accomplishments for working people is straightforward — he does not want to help working people.

As he showed in his massive Trump University scam, in which he pretended to offer students valuable business advice and in fact offered them garbage, Trump sees working people as dupes he can cheat and defraud. He believes he deserves your money more than you do, and his whole career has been devoted to transferring that money from you to him — not least through the massive corruption he’s engaged in during his second term.

ICE was in Vermont yesterday and after causing a multi-vehicle accident near two public schools they pursued the person they hadn’t positively identified into a house. When they finally got a warrant to enter the house (roughing up protestors in the process)… www.vermontpublic.org/local-news/2...
Who was arrested, and why?

None of the three people detained at the house on Dorset Street was Corona-Sanchez, federal prosecutors said on Thursday morning.

Because Coral Hart is not a real writer.

Coral Hart is an opportunistic vampire — a thief, a grifter, a lazy pick-me.

She’s not even a master vampire. No, the master vampires are the ones who built this plagiarism machine. She’s just a ghoulish neonate, a feral bloodsucker down in the sewers happy to feed on the blood-soaked fatberg formed in the tunnels by the elder lords.

She’s a “writer” the same way I’m a “chef” when I pull a frozen dinner out of the fucking microwave. Someone else did all the work and packaged it together. I just hit the buttons and set the time.

So, to remind you:

Writers who use AI —

Are not real writers.

Stephen Miller, a goblin who looks like someone drew a face on a thumb, is also a ghoul and doesn’t seem to understand that everything he thinks will “make America strong” or whatever is what is going to kill whatever hope America has at staying relevant globally. prospect.org/2026/01/31/t...
But it should console nobody if Miller’s stock within the White House is on the decline. In the best-case scenario, he inflicted enough institutional destruction to consume a generation repairing the damage; in the worst, he declines television news interviews for the next six months and devotes his attention to rigging the next election for Vance-Rubio. That’s the thing about politicians and repellent personalities: The former instinctively trust the latter because they never threaten to upstage them, and Miller has never shown any desire to run for office or get people to like him. He’s kept his eye on the long game of killing democracy entirely, and is perilously close to a final victory if no one stops him.

Democrats can keep debating whether to stand five degrees or fifteen degrees left of center, fine-tuning messages drowned out by the latest Trump spectacle. They can chase moderate voters our data shows won’t materialize while their base stays home. They can maintain faith that reasonableness will eventually triumph.

Or they can accept the evidence: the old rules are dead. In a nationalized media environment with an authoritarian movement capturing one major party, electoral politics has become existential conflict. This requires not moderation but mobilization, not positioning but purpose, not just messaging but genuine reform to prove that Democrats will fight for democracy itself by first attacking the corruption that rots it from within.

McFarland’s remarks reminded me of something Stephen Miller, the Trump adviser, had written: “Migrants and their descendants recreate the conditions, and terrors, of their broken homelands.” In Minnesota, the opposite was happening. The “conditions and terrors” of immigrants’ “broken homelands” weren’t being re-created by immigrants. They were being re-created by people like Miller. The immigrants simply have the experience to recognize them

Surprised this is still available on a government site:
Section 3 Disqualification from Holding Office
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Trump richly deserved whatever reputational harm and possible legal retribution may come to him as a result of his ties to Epstein. But, at its heart, this has always been a scandal about the ruling class as a whole, not one individual or political party.

We'd all be better off if we listened to @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social more often. Also lol Van Jones calling himself a progressive. Yeah okay whatever buddy.
If you are a progressive, says Van Jones (a progressive), you should be offended by various policies of Iran’s government, and therefore you should accept the need to drop bombs on Iran. At no point on this smoothly paved highway to hell does Van Jones stop to marvel at his own mental transition between a nation’s people and its government. Nor does he stop to ask himself whether the proposition, “If a nation’s government and some of its people hold ideas that you disagree with, you should go to war with them” may be flawed. Nor does he end this speech by volunteering to have his own home blown up by Iranian soldiers as penance for the various detestable beliefs of the Trump administration. Odd.
