Yup. Protection for Putin, not benefit to the US. Ben says no meaningful benefit, but to presume any benefit at all would require us to think that Russia would actually export diesel. bsky.app/profile/meid...

The US is not importing fuel from Russia. Putin and Trump are setting up Ukraine to blame for the diesel shortage in the US with the goal of furthering Trump's real estate development in Russia and increasing the value of his stake in companies that are worth more now that he's lifting sanctions.

Very strange because if I understand it correctly, Austrian law prohibits spying only against Austria. Perhaps Russia intelligence has so heavily infiltrated Austrian intelligence that, at least within Austria, spying on the former amounts to spying on the latter.

A reminder that in "2001: A Space Odyssey," what triggers HAL, the supercomputer, to kill all the astronauts is being shut down. Building in proper education of the models from the beginning seems like a necessity.

It seems odd that he puts "travel ban" in English, not even transliterating, but I don't read enough of this stuff to know. For me that would require either a macro set for the phrase or switching keyboard settings. That's not much, but I wouldn't do it without a reason.

In high school, we read "A Modest Proposal," and Ms. Oswalt asked us to write something similar. Mine was for live executions televised to boost ratings. I didn't expect it to actually happen, although IIRC , my teacher told me to be careful because someone might take it seriously.

If you're not already following Tim White it's worth doing so for his commentary on Russia's actions in Ukraine - which don't seem to be reported elsewhere (although it looks like he is on the "other" site as well). The BBC, ITV and other broadcasters seem to report b****r all about his efforts.

I really wish more news analysts read science fiction regularly. Particularly Isaac Asimov. Who thought through all the implications of the dangers of artificial intelligence DECADES ago, and developed rules to prevent it/them from killing us.

#Hastert broke the banking laws by illegally structuring cash withdrawals to evade reporting laws so he could pay hush money to hide his sexual abuse of teenage boys. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison (not jail, CBS) for that. The statute of limitations barred his prosecution for sex crimes.

GregSergienko @gregsergienko.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes. For those not around then, the "violating banking laws" that CBS mentions happened because he was paying large amounts of cash to cover up his sex crimes against children.

This piece links to a FB post from Rep. Rod Furniss, who says he's a no on prop 1 and it should be the "No. 1 issue" to address the law and health exceptions/criminal liabilities in January. Which is funny, because Furniss knows firsthand that those bills have gone nowhere for three years now.

Defamation is the first part of the conversation. If there's no defamation claim—either libel or slander—the plaintiff loses. If state law provides a defamation claim, then the court considers the constitutional defense, which succeeds even if there's an otherwise-valid defamation claim.

It makes even less difference than that. Florida already allows religious exemptions, and I expect that those opposed to vaccines on moral or ethical grounds will lie, if necessary, to claim a religious exemption.

I fear I've lost this battle, but as a curmudgeon, I'm still going to distinguish between refutes and rebuts, reserving the former for something that conclusively disproves a claim.

If I were at Reuters, this mutually beneficial relationship between Reuters and Anthropic coupled with Reuters' touting of Anthropic would make me nervous
010
GregSergienko @gregsergienko.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Of course, perhaps the extra capital will so improve Anthropic's prospects that the IPO is win-win for existing and future shareholders, but hand-waving about Anthropic's making major bets is misleading (IMHO) and distracts from the real question.
100
GregSergienko @gregsergienko.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
One has to wonder if the selective leaks are in return for coverage that hypes the IPO. Reuters reports, "Anthropic is making a massive bet" on AI, which is the exact opposite of what the IPO is doing. The IPO laying off a bet to the stock-buying public, suggesting it doesn't like the bet it made.

Between 2015 and 2025, at least 15 children in an Idaho faith-healing sect died of treatable conditions. State law allows that to happen: Parents who say their faith prohibits giving their children lifesaving medical care can’t be prosecuted.

Idaho Law Protects Faith Healers. It Wasn’t Always That Way.
From at least the 1880s through the early 1970s, it was illegal for parents in Idaho to choose prayer over medical care when a child’s life was at stake.
