Remembering my best interaction on Twitter
A 2023 Twitter post from me of a 1970 Moebius illustration of an ornate alien castle, with two figures peering out of a window made out of a sideways glass dome. Someone quoted it to say "7 yr old me at a mcdonalds," and got 38K retweets.

I just revisited RANGO. Been awhile. Love it. A lost chameleon reinvents himself as a tough drifter, who ends up becoming the new sheriff of the town of Dirt. It's funny & clever. Nice animation. Filled with references to many films. Feels like its more for adults. Directed by Gore Verbinski.

When I was working background design for Hey Arnold I made this handy guide to standardize the front door to the Sunset Arms… but once those off-model drawings are in the wild they breed like roaches. (Enjoy Craig's hilarious, tolerant note.)
A clean ground-level drawing of Arnold's stoop with notes describing exact features:

THE PORTHOLE
•hangs just below molding
•approx 1/2 height of other 1st floor windows

Loo! There are exactly 5 STEPS

Rounded sills are GOOD on Arnold's house!

THE CROWN MOLDING
This is made of rounded shapes!
Interior lines are only to suggest dimension. They DO NOT DEFINE FLAT PLANES!

THE FRONT DOOR
•six planks
•don't make window too complicated

(a post-it note from Craig Bartlett)
Jay-
Thanks for the extremely detailed front-door manifesto. Now how about a whole house? C.B.

The cover to Duster. A woman in a flight jacket and jodhpurs holds a machine gun, while a sheriff stands behind with his pistol... they loom over a small town in Texas… in the background, a Nazi bomber silhouetted in front of a swastika is heading downward…

Helmut Wenske cover art to the German edition of "The Second Invasion Of Mars," by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. This one was an alt text workout
A very surreal scene that features a green wizard whose cloak is cracking into pieces, an orange plain with half an alarm clock on it, and a green sea being parted with a weird tesseract-like shape hovering near it. Two nude guys are wading in the ocean while wearing VR-looking headgear that's tethered to a building visible within a doorway being held by a giant blue arm that is emerging from the horizon. Underneath all this is some warped metal and a few merged human faces.

Rick Guidice's 1970s NASA cutaway concept of a Toroidal Colony interior in space.Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard's "The Bridge of Infinities," an 1800s black and white illustration of a row of a planets with a bridge built over them. Saturn's ring has turned into a balcony with people on it.Three sci-fi magazine covers: Dan Adkins' October 1966 cover to If magazine featuring a guy shooting a gun, Frank R Paul's Sep 1927 Amazing Stories cover featuring a big venus flytrap eating a guy, and Wally Wood's April 1959 cover to Galaxy magazine featuring a group of aliens and robots playing poker.Your first book was Worlds Beyond Time: what will this new book do that you couldn't do with that one?
There’s a great Leo Steinberg quote: “All art is infested by other art.” My first book took a really close look at one slice of science fiction illustration (mostly book covers, mostly 1960s-’80s), so this new one is pulling back to look at the web of influences that went into that era and emerged from it.
I’m covering such a broad area that it’s going to be impossible to include everything, so I’m approaching it more like an art smorgasbord that jumps around between centuries and mediums.

The first color pages are in for the graphic novel I'm working on right now (with art by Carlos Aón) and you are going to LOVE this book.
Comic panel: a confident, bespectacled man in a suit walks in an amber-lit hallway. A nurse behind him looks into camera knowingly… while behind them, in a coldly lit room, a girl with a pony tail sits in a wheelchair looking out a window into the rainy night.
MAN: Oh, well… I suppose we'll just file it under "minor details that don't really change anything."
