One indicator to gauge the current energy crisis: European LNG imports were 4% lower in 2026 than in 2025 so far, 30% lower in early August, according to Bloomberg. As Europe was catching up subsequently, imports by Northeast Asia fell. Lucky there were these high imports in Jan-Feb.

It's good to be "Europe's largest refiner" in the current environment: "[TotalEnergies] pledged to lift its dividend by more than 5% a year through 2030 and boost share buybacks for the next two quarters. Shares of the company rose 0.8% higher in Paris, taking this year’s gain to 45%." - Bloomberg

Now is not the time for across-the-board road fuel subsidies in Germany. Yet top CDU officials are mulling exactly that via VAT cuts, to ease escalating diesel & gasoline costs. This makes every liter cheaper for everyone & so encourages consumption. A 🧵 on why that’s a problem:

Wow, wholesale gas prices in Europe are now back to levels last seen in 2022. Looks like delaying the refilling of storage because of high prices this summer wasn't a terribly smart idea: now gas is both expensive and a cold winter risks depleting the insufficient stocks.

Der weltweite Energieschock steht bevor: Was nun passieren muss
