Phil Tippett | Legendary animator shutting his studio, selling off decades of art and memorabilia
"I'm retired from the racket," says Star Wars and RoboCop animator Phil Tippett, as he closes his studio and auctions off swathes of work.

I keep seeing pro-AI folks say, “If these restaurants just spent some extra time working on their AI prompts, their food could look good!” Yeah, that’s the thing. They’re using AI because they don’t want to spend some extra time. The whole appeal of AI for them IS the speed and lack of effort.

How's the Grok version of the Odyssey going? I haven't heard or seen much about it for a minute. I can't wait to see 90 weirdly beige seconds of video where an Odysseus who sort of looks like Charlton Heston mumbles some stuff to a Circe who looks exactly like Jesse Jane.

It's so hilarious that making a Spider-Man movie more like the way Christopher Nolan makes his movies = having a script and a plan and, you know, a reason for the movie to exist, beyond "let's make more money"

The news is always "This absolute fool was dismantled in hearings today. He is manifestly unqualified for the position and would be an existential danger if confirmed. Disaster. He is set to be confirmed immediately." When you ask why everyone is furious and exhausted all the time, this is why.

Alfred Molina is a wonderful actor. But the Finance Chuds rubbed their bald heads together and said "We HAVE TO get the Dr. Octopus guy to play this book Octopus otherwise no one will get it." It never occurs to them that Marcellus should have an unfathomable Voice we've never heard before.

Indispensable. Just like @horrornonna.com's book upon which this is based- just like @kierlajanisse.bsky.social, who appears in this piece, and her landmark book, too. The scholars assembled here - the scholarship in general on this topic - is sharp, pre-conception shaking, uniformly brilliant. Joy.

Maybe my most normie opinion is how much I love The Oscars. I don’t give a shit about any other award show, either. It has nothing to do with fashion, speeches, or celebrity. I just cherish the lovefest for an art form in peril, and I think it is interesting to see how sensibility/taste evolves.

Twins (played by the same actor) have always been a pet peeve. They annoy me to hell onscreen because it always reeks of gimmickry. Until I saw Michael B. Jordan conjure the Moore Brothers in SINNERS. First twin performance that made me believe the roles were played by two different actors.

Cruise is a savvy reader with great taste who can distinguish a good screenplay from a bad one. Give him 100 scripts and he'll identify the two that shine. This skill (among actors) is more uncommon than you think.

Talent isn't rare. Throw an apple & you hit someone with talent. Perseverance? rare. Work ethic? exceedingly rare; the willingness to grind. Being able to endure the scorn, rejection & privation a life in the arts dooms you to in the United States is unicorn-scarce. But talent? Talent is everywhere.

Generative AI by definition is conformity. It is an averaging of anything you ask of it - quite literally guessing what the most likely version of a thing might be. It is, by definition, mainstream, as is everything it creates old and deeply ideological, as every model trains on similar data.
