These results suggest individuals can learn to regulate their empathy wisely on social media to improve their well-being. Interventions like this aimed at changing psychological experiences online to change how it impacts us offer an alternative to banning social media. #empathy #socialmedia

Improvements in well-being were mediated by changes in empathy online: greater wise empathy (positive sharing, appreciative joy, and compassion), reduced unwise empathy (negative sharing, and personal distress), and greater self-acceptance (higher self compassion, lower upward social comparison).
The effect of condition travels through wise empathy, unwise empathy, and self-acceptance latent constructs.

Participants completed a baseline survey -> 2 days of experience sampling -> intervention/control instructions -> 3 days of experience sampling. Participants who learned to regulate empathy wisely on Instagram had higher well-being when they had recently browsed. They also showed changes in empathy
Wise empathy participants had higher positive emotion sharing, appreciative joy, and compassion for negative emotions than control participants.Wise empathy participants also showed less negative emotion sharing and personal distress, as well as fewer upward social comparisons.

This suggests that, if we wish to respond effectively when people share good news, we should try to use our empathy to feel what the other person is feeling, and co-experience their positive emotions with them. As a bonus, this seems to help empathizers too: psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/...

After each conversation, participants rated their partner's response to their good news. Were they active and enthusiastic, or passive and uncaring? Were they constructive or destructive? We found that positive emotion sharing predicted response quality, but other dimensions of empathy did not.

Participants took turns sharing a positive event with their partner in video-recorded conversations. They then watched the videos back twice while rating first their own affect, then their partners affect, with a continuous rating dial. We thus tapped multiple empathy dimensions.

Capitalization (sharing good news with others) is beneficial, but benefits depend on the response. Yet, the psychological processes in a 'responder' related to better responses are unclear. We had strangers in the lab share good news with each other to test which aspects of empathy seem to help.

How should you respond when friends share good news? My new article in Emotion with @chrisoveis.bsky.social, Dr. Gu, and Dr. Gordon (doi.org/10.1037/emo0...) suggests feeling positive emotions with your friend when they 'capitalize' (share good news) correlates with better responses. #empathy

I expect it is happening, people often hesitate to share positive news to protect other's (e.g. doi.org/10.1016/j.ob...). Disclosing to AI could let them celebrate without risk. But, they could be foregoing chances to strengthen relationships and people want to hear our good news more than we think.

As they say, a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved, but a joy shared is a joy doubled. Capitalization is about doubling one's joy by sharing it with others and as you say making stronger connections in the process.

Greg Depow @gregdepow.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
I get what you mean because we often talk about capitalizing on someone else's mistake, but I don't think of it as having an ulterior motive. I think capitalization is about 'capitalizing on' positive events as opportunities to share with others and benefit over and above the event alone.

Greg Depow @gregdepow.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
This was underpinned by more active constructive and less passive destructive responses. Positive emotion sharing remained predictive controlling for all empathy dimensions, as well as convo features like depth of disclosure and individual moments of positive/negative affect for both dyad members.
010
Greg Depow @gregdepow.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
We find that co-experienced positive affect, or feeling positive with the capitalizer, was uniquely predictive of greater perceived responses to capitalization attempts. The more responders felt positive with the capitalizer, the higher they were rated on capitalization responses.

Greg Depow @gregdepow.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
This allowed us to capture dimensions of empathy like empathic accuracy, emotional synchrony, co-experienced positive and negative affect, and compassion. Participants who disclosed their positive event then rated their partner in terms of the partner's responses to their capitalization attempts.
