In other words: This meme is a surprisingly accurate scaled depiction of the magnitude of the 2026 El Niño event vs the 1997 event *if using the absolute index.* But if using the relative index, Danny DeVito is currently the same height as Arnold Schwarzenegger. And either pairing is striking... 👀
A common meme from the movie "Twins" featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger towering over a similarly dressed Danny Devito modified such that "1997" appears above the diminuitive DeVito, and 2026 above Schwarzenegger.

Of the NYT 100 "best television" list, I have seen 1 episode of 4 of them, and the entire run of three. Total. In other words, I have no idea what the "best" are because I just don't watch much.

what the jewish right and its wealthiest benefactors are doing right now is tying the overwhelmingly liberal and progressive jewish people to an explicitly conservative political project without our consent and asserting that our commitment to genuine liberalism is in fact opposition to it

The idea that "writing good rooms" is how you create a good city is a tell that for this author the world is merely a stage set, and "worldbuilding" is a fancy euphemism for set design.

excellent thread. Personally I'd say that Cory's talking about "novelty" and conflating that with "surprise", but that's probably a trivial point, and definitely pedantic.

Garment descriptions can be unsatisfying in so many ways - either long-winded or not really descriptive. I think "dressed in an unusually-cut frock coat" manages to generously leave some questions for the reader, while conveying a good sense of the scene.

Los Alamos happened because the US secretly imported 1600 German (Nazi, in many cases) scientists and technologists through Operation Paperclip in a project that started around 1945. While it is true that many scientists had left pre-war, that didn't make Los Alamos happen.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see a dragon sitting on a pile of treasure. A speech bubble pointing off panel reads, “Dragon, why do you have all this treasure?”
In the second panel we zoom in on the dragons face. He simply says “shiny”.
In the third panel we pan to the left and see that there is a crow standing next to the dragon on the treasure.
In the fourth panel we zoom in on the crows face. He says “hell yeah”.
