I’ve given my copy of this book away twice. I’ve played the audiobook in the car and made family members listen to the entire Introduction. I believe this book is part of a balanced diet of understanding why things are the way they are, and how we got here.

lol there was a big debate about this when the book came out and now I can't remember the answer, but it was definitely not Danvers. I want to say Milwaukee?

I don’t believe that incarceration solves anything, but some crimes are so heinous that there’s simply no other choice. I speak, of course, of singing at full volume throughout a cross-country flight.

No one is better than Caitlin Dickerson at writing about the human costs of our society's deportation obsession. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
When I went to visit Sarah in May, in a Dallas suburb, her 4-year-old son, Johnny, answered the door and asked me: “Do you know when my dad is coming home?”
Before I could answer, Johnny continued: “Do you know what happened to him?” He repeated versions of these questions over the two days of my visit. “Do you know where my dad is? Do you know if he’s okay?”
When the questions would start, Johnny’s 12-year-old sister, Katie, tried to distract him with coloring books and screens. Recently, he’d had an hours-long meltdown when Sarah tried to donate some of Edwin’s work clothes that were crowding the closet. Every afternoon he sits at the front window waiting for his dad’s truck to pull up outside. She called Marlyn in a panic. After her own experience in detention, Marlyn was terrified of her children ending up in government custody. Estela tried to reassure Marlyn that she wouldn’t let anyone take the boys. But she was also scared that she might not be able to stop it from happening. Tension was building between the two women. Estela despaired about giving up her life to take care of Eber and Isaac. All of her time, and a lot of her money, was going toward the boys’ needs: clothes, school supplies, food, medication. Marlyn, who had no way to repay her, was grateful for the help and embarrassed by how much she needed it. She also worried that her children were becoming too attached to Estela. “She was scared I would keep her kids,” Estela told me. “I said, ‘No, I would never do that, because I’m also a mom.’ ” But she knew that sending the boys to Venezuela could traumatize them all over again. She put Eber in day care so they wouldn’t grow too close.
Eber couldn’t travel until he’d had lung surgery; his doctors said the cyst would become cancerous if it wasn’t removed, and getting the procedure in Venezuela would be nearly impossible. And no airline would be willing to fly Isaac out of the country without a legal guardian or passport.

ugh yes see this is what I should switch to, but I have so many years of shit stored in Trint that switching seems impossible. but yes, seeing people say AI transcription is dangerous is, uh, lol.

it is... too many, but I have learned that going a little manic in the early stages of book reporting makes me hate life less later.

Megan Greenwell @greenwell.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
unfortunately the only way I know how to find book characters is by talking to 1,000 people 😭 I use Trint, which is not perfect, but I like it! It is not cheap, but last time I looked all the cheaper options did train their models on user data, and now it'd be a GIANT PAIN to switch anyway.

Megan Greenwell @greenwell.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I've been WORKING so don't know why people are debating the merits of AI transcription, but there absolutely are options that don't train their models on your data. I pay $750 a year for mine, which is expensive (but a tax writeoff!) and has allowed me to do 37 interviews this week.

been a while since there was an absolute must-listen episode on the radio.
The Argument
Ten years ago, Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote an essay about her decision to send her daughter to a segregated, low-income school. The essay was influential on parents and policymakers, and Nikole spent a decade hearing from people about how it changed their thinking. Now, she hears from one more person: her daughter, in a conversation ten years in the making.
This episode will be available here and on the This American Life podcast on September 27 at 7pm CT.

a lot of writers think being “thorough” means showing their work by quoting 1,000 people and trying to cram every possible point in. imo Nikole Hannah-Jones and Rachel Aviv are the masters at doing the opposite: stripping everything away to get at the heart of the matter.

I have so, so many thoughts — as a white person who attended a “bad” high school, works with FGLI high schoolers, and is reporting on the wildly different reading educations students receive — but my main one is: my god are we lucky that NHJ is willing to write about all the messy complexities.

A decade ago, I made a decision about my daughter’s education that I hoped would challenge New York City’s separate and unequal school system. Now 16, she thinks I made the wrong choice.
