(sorry for endless rambling, but ethical systems are so very fascinating)
000
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
of course there are more consequential debates like abortions of ectopic pregnancies - for some catholic ethicists (AFAIU) it's more OK if you do a surgical operation, excising the tube, and leaving the embryo to die vs actively killing it with a drug (which is more safe and preserves fertility)
100
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
so it's ok to use vaccines and drugs made in HEK293, or where they were used in research where there is no alternatives, but you should try to use more ethical alternatives if possible. you are more complicit if you use this cell line, and even more if you derived it etc
100
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
for example one of the main cell lines used in research and production of gene therapies and recombinant vaccines is HEK293 - an embryonic cell line from aborted tissue, propagated from the 70s. Big no-no for Church, so they debate are derive products ethical, and have "degrees of responsibilities"

Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
these types of archaic, pre-Macchiavelian ethical debates remind me of one institution for which this debates are still important - the Church. I am very fascinated by Catholic ethical papers on biomed - like www.vatican.va/roman_curia/...

yes she's a small but fierce cat, called Scarlett (although we call her Busya). Something like Caterina Sforza in nature, I imagine. The second one is 2 times bigger and 10 times more peaceful (she is called Fosya). Both strays.

Oh, and for evaluations, I need to list 5 years of my papers with the journals IFs, and quartiles. Mind you, I don't have subscriptions for any of these databases
000
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
She showed it to me it was very fancy - showed the institutes best cited works, collaborators, etc. Not a suprise now that for grants I need to indicate my H indexes for Scopus, WoS, Russian citation index, how much papers in each database for the last 5 years, how many of them are Q1, etc, d naseum
000
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Well, it's Scopus and Clarivates business, sell access to databases, yes, but also sell their tools for the database analysis. Sell it to governments - where are your best scientists? Sell it to grant orgs - what's the labs with the best ROI? Journals - which papers will do better? Etc.

Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

And because these KPIs are hard to achieve with limited resources, you get fraudsters, publications in predatory journals, publications in borderline predatory mega journals, etc.
010
Victor Tatarskiy @greenrat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Wow, that's nuts. One thing I learned when my friend worked in Clarivate is that they love to sell goverments and grant orgs in developing countries, tools for metrics analysis. And then those people use these fancy tools to push the metrics down on us, so they can show numbers going up.
