Why don’t we put solar panels over highways? Imagine the 400 series highways through Toronto were covered in solar panels? Less snow to move in the winter. They’ll absorb heat in the summer and provide clean energy.

The Longest Ballot is pure democratic organizing and it’s honestly embarrassing how much Poilievre is complaining about them @longestballot.bsky.social

Not discussing Agent Orange in a doc re-examining the Vietnam war is journalist malpractice.

The War Remnants Museum, which should be mandatory for any westerners visiting Vietnam has an entire floor dedicated to the victim of Agent Orange.

I watched the @netflix.com doc on the Vietnam War. I was about 3 episodes in before I realized that they weren’t going to talk about Agent Orange at all which is wiiiiild

Leafs fans booing the Leafs at home in Game 7. At some point, we need to blame the fans.

I ran Aislinn Clancy’s campaign in 2023 where they had 18 candidates. We were happy to have Electoral Reform in the conversation!

The only time I heard about Electoral Reform this cycle was in reference to @longestballot.bsky.social. Plus - registering 91 candidates is a feat! That takes people power!

Unpopular Politico Opinion - but I think the @longestballot.bsky.social is brilliant organizing. They had 91 candidates and didn’t elect a spoof candidate and unseated the Leader of the Opposition who doesn’t support electoral reform (whose party ironically uses PR)

They are somewhere between a blackberry and a raspberry. They’re normally ripe late July and early August in southern Ontario. Get the darkest ones! They’re pretty common trees - there’s a ton in my neighborhood!

This is a resolution I can get behind! If you haven’t yet, I always tell people to try mulberries. They’re everywhere and people rarely actually try them

So did the election interference report get submitted yesterday? Do we get to see any of it? 👀

Still crunching the numbers for @mattrichergpo.bsky.social end of year fundraising but it’s looking like it’s going to be one for the record books 👀

what’s happening on twitter right now shows just how important it was for left of center people to leave it earlier these assholes need a target, and deprived of their preferred options they are ripping each other to shreds

Running campaigns is basically a teaching job. People who excel on campaigns are those who are ready to learn, fail and try again. Perfect is the enemy of the good. Curiosity and creativity are the good.

An MPP makes about the same as a 25 year teacher. Both under paid TBH.

It wasn’t until I hit the hashtag that I realized this wasn’t about Canadian politics #canpoli

I still have a bit of an accent from growing up so close to the border. So people generally think I’m American but drop a lick of French and it gets cleared up right away

Whenever I’m travelling internationally, I like to casually speak French any chance I get so other people know I’m Canadian and not American.

Can I please, just once, go on vacation without some major Canadian political news dropping? #canpoli

I’m doing my part. We’re going to elect @mattrichergpo.bsky.social and relieve one of Ford’s cabinet ministers of a job.

I now own dickies work pants in several different styles and colour. Don’t tell my dad, I’ll never hear the end of it.

I’ve lived off the farm almost as long as I lived on the farm. How is it that I am just now understanding how great work pants are?!?

Week 4 - shift into a new gear. The plan makes sense, you know what needs to happen and how you get there. Your systems and teams are working. Week 4 is the good stuff.

Week 3 - sheer panic swiftly followed by a personal reckoning and an acceptance that staying busy is better than reminding your body what rested feels like

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
Week 2 - exhaustion, anxiety, systems you made yesterday not immediately working.

Pre-week 1 - exciting, causally making the worlds most unachievable plans. Week 1 - overwhelming, can’t believe how little I can accomplish in a day without acknowledging that I’ve tasked myself 5x the work I can reasonably accomplish.

I’ve run 4 campaigns in the last 3 years. Here’s the only thing I know for sure:

This past week was a busy one at Queen's Park. In addition to the scathing Auditor General's report, there were a number of important votes:

The deep goal of bluesky is to decentralize the social internet so that every individual controls their experience of it rather than having it be controlled by 5 random billionaires. Everyone thinks they signed up for a demuskified twitter...we actually signed an exciting and bizarre experiment.

I am giving a commencement speech soon and I keep thinking that the only piece of advice I really want to give is “do things more.”

Anyway, Ford is obviously calling an election in the new year so if you’re feeling discouraged, now is the time to support your local riding associations if you want to fire Doug Ford. He deserves it.

Even if you don’t win, running a progressive campaign in rural seats will have an oversized impact. Make the PCs EARN their rural votes and open up the 905 to the other campaigns.
100
Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
And the people in rural Ontario KNOW the PCs are taking the for granted so they are actually fairly willing to see if someone else will give them more than the NOTHING the PCs have given them for 6 years.

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Strong campaigns in rural Ontario will force the PC leadership to fight to hold seats they once took for granted.
100
Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
If nobody challenges the PCs in rural Ontario, the fight will come down to the 905 where progressives can’t compete. The GTA is a very difficult and expensive media market.

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Doug Ford came to our riding at minimum once a week just trying to hold one of their safety’s seats.

THIS!! In 2022, I ran probably Ontario biggest campaign in a safe conservative riding and we nearly beat them by talking to voters day in and day out. Most people had never had someone knock on their door before.

I think I’ve figured out a great way to mange volunteers with programs that people use everyday but I just don’t have enough quiet time to build and test it cuz my old volunteer systems is slow.

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
I love working on campaigns but the one downfall is that once you start it is basically impossible to just sit down and get a whole day of quiet work done. What I wouldn’t give to turn off my phone for a whole day and just get all my random thoughts and plans in order!

With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians not voting, you have so much opportunity to engage your friends and neighbours and ensure they also are demanding better.

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
But most importantly, know that as a citizen of this country, you are also responsible for telling that story. Can’t find a party that aligns with your vision? There are tons of political groups shaping the narrative and putting pressure on politicians

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
We must continue to tell the story of corruption, but we have to tell the WHOLE STORY, and not let those who want more corruption frame it in a way that’s beneficial to them

Security looks like a guaranteed livable income in case your corporate boss decides to fire you on a whim. It looks like having access to a doctor when you get sick. It looks like being able to afford food for your family.
100
Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
In order to change the narrative, we can’t continue to fall into the traps they are laying for us. We need to imagine something better and encourage them to do the same.

Maureen Balsillie @greenmreen.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Corruption lets corporations get away with de-valuing our work and making us feel like we are living precariously.
