To see Bass allies blame her opponent (Nithya Raman, see post below) for public encampments after four years of Bass resisting perhaps the main policy fix that could aid the unhoused — _permitting more housing_ — is one hell of a show of chutzpah. A pathetic show, but still a show.

Homelessness has increased in L.A., dealing fresh setback to Mayor Karen Bass
The numbers from this year's point-in-time homelessness count delivered a major blow to Bass, who is seeking reelection and has made the issue a central part of her agenda.

The Bass approach of (a) standing foursquare with NIMBYs against density, and (b) forking $$$ out for temporary housing when there's no affordable permanent housing at the end of that bridge _has not worked_. It can't work, b/c throwing $$$ at a supply problem only pushes prices upward.

L.A. mayor Karen Bass says you can defeat NIMBYism by building less
A mayor who wants to see her city become affordable would lean into conflicts instead of shrinking from them.

Just got this text from the police union, and I have to say: If Karen Bass was going to fix homelessness in L.A. by spending hundreds of millions on Inside Safe, she would've fixed homelessness already. She hasn't, at all. Her attack squad doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Under L.A. mayor's $300-million homeless program, 40% have returned to the street
Even as Mayor Karen Bass' signature homelessness initiative brings more people indoors, a growing number are winding up back on the street.

It’s giving “Trump, who experts say is president, defies Democrats, which experts say is the name of a political party in a country that experts call the United States, by diverting dollars, which experts say is a currency, to South America from Europe—which experts describe as separate continents.”

People need to understand the people leading the AI industry, transhumanist/longtermist/EA movements, and tech broadly, as died-in-the-wool pseudoscientists, denialists (climate change, the holocaust), and crank purveyors of conspiritualist woo of the highest order. The height of Rationalism.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." – @lilymasonphd.bsky.social, in the Journal of Democracy 🎯 muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...
On these issues, the parties have become increasingly divided. By 2024, Republicans scored significantly higher, on average, than Democrats and independents on racial resentment against black Americans, belief that women’s place is in the home, endorsement of Christian nationalism, and belief in “replacement theory” (the conspiracy theory that immigrants are part of a Democratic Party plot to replace white Christian Americans). These party differences did not exist in the 1980s, when Democrats were more racially resentful, Republicans were less misogynistic, and neither party broadly supported Christian nationalism or replacement theory.

From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The problem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Right, but it’s a private-sector led bet rather than an attempt to minimize the seriousness of the issue with public policy. That’s the part I lament.

Yep. The objective is to reform the institution as thoroughly as one can, to set it on firmer ground for decades to come, _without_ constitutional amendment. Insistence on going through the veto point of bipartisanship is just a spineless way of campaigning to keep to status quo.

“Legislation to set an 18-year term limit”: the thing about Third Way’s plan riding on a term limit is that a term limit can’t be set by a law! It requires a constitutional amendment. Wasting energy for reform on a plan that’d be tossed after years of litigation would be malpractice.

An 18-year term limit and an ethics code … I’m trying to imagine what the mission brief for this court-reform plan was: “nothing, but make it sexy”?

Anyway, Tennessee — extending its legendary run in 2026 after stripping Black lawmakers of cmte. assignments, gerrymandering a Black-majority district from existence, and siccing ICE and the Nat'l Guard on Memphis — just spent two hours trying to "hurt the people [it] needs to be hurting. Wretched.

There's always been a sour, atavistic energy to capital punishment, made vivid to me w/ stories on local news as a kid about Alabama's electric chair, 'Yellow Mama.' Some just thrill at the thought of the state — to quote a Trump voter from 2019 — "hurting the people [it] needs to be hurting."

The thing about the death penalty has always been that it relies on an infallibility — after all, there's no reversing the punishment once administered — that no state in human civilization has ever achieved. But now there's another, rhyming problem: the state can't even properly administer it.
