This is a photo of some rocks and sand. It was taken earlier today, with a camera 247,000,000 km away. It was taken on Mars. And now you're looking at it on your screen.
Dusty, red rocks, and red soil. Darker soil in the middle of the image marks where one of the rocks has been displaced.

An amazing glimpse into Mesolithic everyday life: this more than 7,500-year-old ring was made from heather roots, carefully rolled up and prepared for later use. It was discovered at the settlement of Motala/Sweden, where the same material was used for fish traps. Dating 5750–5550 BC. 🧵1/2 📷me

Discworld QOTD, from The Last Hero
"That's seven," said Vena. "Seven of us, against one of him. Seven against one.
And he thinks he's going to save the world.
And he knows who we are and he's still going to fight us..."
"You think he's a hero?" cackled Mad Hamish. "Hah! Wha' kind o' hero works for forty-three dollars a month? Plus allowances!"
But the cackle was all alone in the sudden quietness. The Horde could calculate the particular mathematics of heroism quite quickly.
There was, there always was, at the start and finish... the Code. They lived by the Code. You followed the Code, and you became part of the Code for those who followed you. The Code was it. Without the Code, you weren't a hero. You were just a thug in a loincloth.
The Code was quite clear. One brave man against seven... won. They knew it was true. In the past, they'd all relied on it. The higher the odds, the greater the victory.
That was the Code.
Forget the Code, dismiss the Code, deny the Code... and the Code would take you.

A new dinosaur, Kayrasaurus changliensis, has been described from Chinese fossils. This early therizinosaur had tiny teeth, a long neck, and big claws, providing new information about this unusual group's evolution! 🧪 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Life reconstruction of Jehol therizinosaurians, illustrating variation in body size, skeletal proportions and inferred ecological strategies among taxa. From bottom to top: L. sihedangensis is shown in a posture suggesting greater cursoriality; J. yixianensis is depicted engaging in lingual-assisted feeding, consistent with its robust hyoid apparatus; B. inexpectus exhibits a robust, less cursorial bauplan; and K. changliensis is reconstructed browsing on higher vegetation, reflecting its larger body size and inferred feeding strategy.

An ancient Egyptian crocodile that bites! 🐊 More than 3,000 years ago, someone carved this crocodile from wood and gave it a movable jaw. Perhaps a child’s toy, it offers a small glimpse into the playful side of ancient life. From Thebes, c. 1540-1075 BC Neues Museum Berlin 📷 me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Egyptian wooden crocodile with a movable lower jaw, resting on a white museum display surface. The elongated crocodile is carved to show its rough textured body, with carved scales along its back, raised eyes, and a hinged mouth with the jaw extended open. Perhaps it was once a toy. Ancient Greek cup in the shape of a cow’s hoof! 🐮❤️ A novelty wine cup from some 2,500 years ago! The Met 📷 by me www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti... #Archaeology
My photo shows an Attic terracotta red-figure drinking cup. The lower part of the cup is in the shape of a cow's hoof coloured orangey-red with faint vertical black brush strokes. There is a wider black line down the front of the hoof which may represent a cow’s cloven hoof The upper part of the cup is cylindrical with a single black handle and outsplayed rim. It is painted with a detailed landscape scene depicting a seated herdsman, with two cows, a dog and a hare. The figures are orangey-red against a black sip background. My photo shows the side of the cup depicting the herdsman and one of the cows. The herdsman wears shoes, a cap, and a cloak of fur or hide. Height of cup 10.3 cm. The cup is attributed to a painter recalling the Brygos Painter
circa 470–460 BC.

Wonderful ancient artistry! About 40,000 years ago, this small, graceful horse figurine was carved from mammoth ivory! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely off-white in colour. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents. It measures a mere 2.5 cm in height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth.

The 'Vogelherd Horse' was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.
