Hazards of the job. 😅 Hot take - corporations should provide demo access to their portals so that we can see the quality of their UX before choosing a bank, lender, credit card, etc.

Title - Data in Media: The Big Government Money Pipe Freeze
Earlier this week I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts - Planey Money. Their guest, Lauren Bauer from the Hamilton Project, is a policy expert. She wanted to monitor government spending to see how DOGE has impacted spending - which payments were frozen, and which are still flowing. The episode is a great short story featuring data engineering, APIs, and high stakes data analysis!

The visual continues to a small multiple chart with trends for each spending category, showing the 7 Day Moving Avg of Treasury Outlays for Nov 2024 - Feb 2025

I think this NY Powerball entry by Audrey Goodwin is delightful. I love the interactivity, and how plainly it spells out the odds of winning. My favorite detail is how borders and layout settings are used to format the ticket selector. public.tableau.com/app/profile/...

I've seen multiple entries use the Map Layers hack in new and exciting ways. (Method: www.phdata.io/blog/beyond-...) Annabelle Rincon's entry is a great example of this - her first dashboard uses a single worksheet with over 20 map layers! public.tableau.com/app/profile/...
Screenshot of the first dashboard of Annabelle's workbook. It shows about 20 map layers of varying types, including lines, circles, text, shape, and map fill.

My favorite build was for Birding. I attempted to recreated the experience of birding in a chart. As you interact with the dots, you'll see a lot of recurring characters. The less frequent observations stand out against the common birds in my area.
text: I started birdwatching in 2024, and have observed 92 species so far! Most of these outings were in the KC metro area. I managed to get out and see some birds on work trips to Florida and California as well.

If you're interested in birding and data, I took Binoculars to Binomials this spring and enjoyed it!

The dashboard creates a classic ‘glow’ effect using four layers. A base image with the room and furniture, a glow worksheet with the density mark type, a second image with the items, and a targeting worksheet with invisible marks to trigger interactions.

In Tableau I used these eight columns in the mark label, alternating the format. Because we can't control the text highlight, I used a very light font color for the blackouts, making it blend into the white background.
In tableau the mark labels were edited like this: <Description 1A> <Description 1B> <Description 2A> <Description 2B> <Description 3A> <Description 3B> <Description 4A> <Description 4B> with the 'A' fields in a very light, low contrast color.

Felicia Styer @graphhopper.bsky.social · 14/03/2024
To do this, I broke each tagline into eight columns of data. Each 'A' column held blacked out text, while the 'B' columns held visible text.
Spreadsheet with 15 columns. Column headers in order: Film	LGBTQIA+	War	"""Domestic"""	Violence Against Women	SV	Description Full	Description 1A	Description 1B	Description 2A	Description 2B	Description 3A	Description 3B	Description 4A	Description 4B

The film column includes film titles.
The LGBTQIA+ through SV columns are mostly empty. films with those themes are marked with x.
The rest of the columns have text from the IMDB taglines

A peek behind the scenes of my Oscars + Gender viz. public.tableau.com/app/profile/... The biggest challenge I faced was finding a way to get Alanna's incredible text analysis into Tableau. This is a screenshot of what she originally created.
Screenshot of a document.
Title Outstanding Female Acting + Director + Best Picture

Films have a header in this format Title (Year)
and then the tagline is below it. Most of the tagline has been blacked out, leaving just the text about characters visible.

These are the first three sections:

Passage to India (1984)
[redacted] an Indian doctor, an Englishwoman [redacted] a city magistrate [redacted] an English educator.

Fatal Attraction (1987)
A married man's one-night stand [redacted] him and his family.

Working Girl (1988)
[redacted] a secretary [redacted] her boss [redacted]

In early February my sister and I were talking about gender and the #Oscars. Together we turned that conversation turned into this Tableau Public visualization.
Data visualization titled Project Scope.

The main takeaway is that the analysis focuses on 81 films (3%) that received 2+ Actress or Actor nominations and zero for the other gender.

The visualization includes three sections: a marginal histogram of Actor vs Actress Nominations, a timeline of the highlighted films, and a short block of text giving context.Data visualization titled Project Analysis

The main takeaway here is that films with outstanding male acting are twice as likely to be nominated for best picture or director.

The visualization has three sections: a stacked bar comparing nomination outcomes for films with outstanding female acting vs films with outstanding male acting, a list of film details, and text with insights.Data visualization titled Film Taglines

This section has short descriptions of the films edited to highlight character portrayals. The main takeaway is that male characters are featured more prominently.Bar chart of nominees by the number of overall nominations and the number of nominations that fell inside the bounds of the project.

I'm taking a class about birding and javascript! Our first project was creating a postcard. While the p5.js version took me 10x longer, and looks worse, I'm still super happy with how it turned out! public.tableau.com/app/profile/... b2b-postcard.glitch.me
This is the p5 version of the postcard. There are open circles with varying colors and sizes, but no legends or labels. These circles are unfilled. The Tableau version of the postcard. This version includes size and color legends, and mark labels.

Blue circles = already known species. These tend to be larger circles and include Canada Goose, American Crow, American Robin, Red Winged Blackbird, Bluejay, and Mourning Dove.

Green Circles = already familiar. These include House Finch, European Starling, Common Grackle.

Yellow = new level of detail. These circles are smaller and include Red tailed hawk, barred owl, and hairy woodpecker.

Red = Completely new. This includes Pileated Woodpecker, and Dark eyed junco.

No major surprises here. We know boarding and deplaning are the times with the highest risk - ventilation improves once in flight. The in flight level was higher than I expected. I often unmask about 30 minutes into a flight, but after seeing these readings I stayed masked.
