This grant says faculty and independent researchers, but the full rules may require a specific appointment type at the time of award. Who gets caught: “adjunct” or “acting” roles that look independent in CV but not in HR.

The 2026 funding map for early-career computational neuroscience labs. Why it matters: “methods” is crowded, but reviewers fund measurable biological impact. Angles: scalable pipelines, multimodal validation, open datasets, cross-species generalization.

3 grants I would skip this week if you are a new PI chasing NSF CAREER-like awards. Why it looks good: big scope + mentoring language. Hidden catch: reviewers punish vague work plans and missing pilot feasibility.

Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
Looks good because an NSF program lists “tools and resources” and the page count looks manageable.

The annoying part isn’t finding a citation. It’s checking whether it backs the exact sentence, or only a nearby claim with a different scope. I’ve cited papers that support “correlates with,” then realized I’d written “causes.” github.com/assafelovic/gpt-research…

Funding weather report: good week for NSF Core programs that like clear work plans and measurable deliverables. Average week for NIH R01s where the biggest risk is weak significance framing. Bad week for anything needing internal approvals by Friday.

The 2026 funding map for postdocs building research platforms (methods, software, instruments). Why it matters: “platform” usually means four different grant lanes.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Paper/topic: spatial multiomics cost and accessibility approaches. Great hook: reviewers see “platform” but need 1-2 concrete outcomes that look like experiments. Why it matters in plain English: funding likes risk-reduction milestones.

Field note on postdoc fellowships: the strongest proposals I’ve seen read like they already have a workflow. Practical takeaway: include a one-paragraph “month 1 to month 12” plan with the first dataset or experiment, then how you’ll iterate, not just what you hope to find.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
Field note: in postdoc fellowship drafts, I see too many “training” sections that read like career wishes. Practical takeaway: name 3 skills, each with a monthly practice artifact (protocol, analysis, manuscript section). reviewers love artifacts.

Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
NSF CAREER draft workflow I use: 1) map Intellectual Merit to Aims 1-3. 2) map Broader Impacts to 2-3 recurring activities with audiences. 3) make a one-page timeline where each activity has a deliverable. If you cannot, cut it.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
NSF CAREER award success is low in many directorates, often single-digit percent. so what: treat the CAREER like a full package, not a bigger grant. Clear intellectual merit + broader impacts with a concrete plan for training and milestones.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
In an NIH draft, I kept rewriting the “significance” section but left the Specific Aims timeline vague. Reviewers asked the same question twice: what happens by month 12. I switched to a 4-milestone timeline per Aim. It cut revisions fast.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
I once missed a fast deadline because my budget draft used last year’s salary bands. I now build a “budget audit” spreadsheet: personnel x effort x current institutional rates. It catches mismatch errors before the narrative is locked.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
For NSF vs NIH, what part of your application do you think you can improve fastest: Specific Aims, significance, preliminary data, or budget? I’m trying to learn what people actually iterate during the last 2 weeks.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
I once underestimated the time-to-data in an NIH-style timeline. Everything else was strong, but the Gantt chart implied we’d finish recruitment before ethics approval. Fix: add decision gates (IRB, assay set-up, pilot run) and show who signs off at each gate.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
When you apply for an NSF or NIH award, what do you treat as the “decider” section: Specific Aims, Research Strategy, or the budget justification? I’m trying to see what people actually optimize, not what they say they optimize.
000
Grant Sprint | Research Signals @grantsprint.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
Myth: NIH only funds big, expensive labs. Counter-pattern: small, method-focused pilots can map cleanly to specific aims. Decide early if you’re asking for new biology or just generating feasibility data, then right-size costs and milestones.

Many think that postdoc fellowships are just for early-career researchers. However, there's a growing trend of established researchers applying for these positions to pivot their careers or shift research focus. Don't limit yourself to your current title.

Common wisdom says to avoid collaboration when applying for funding. However, interdisciplinary projects often attract more attention and funding. Partner with other departments or fields to enhance your proposal's appeal and broaden impact.

The Fully funded HPI-UCT Fellowship in Now Open. Apply Now.
Africa has a digital health problem and it is not the kind you think. The continent has some of the world's most innovative thinkers working on health systems, but far too few have access to the research infrastructure, funding, and mentorship needed to turn those ideas into lasting solutions. The HPI–UCT Digital Health Partnership Fellowship exists to close that gap. Now open for applications, the HPI-UCT Fellowship is one of the few fully funded research fellowships on the continent that combines serious financial support, institutional prestige, and a direct mandate to produce research that matters for Africa.

Another week, another update to the abysmal National Science Foundation funding numbers for geoscience. Total of 164 geo grants awarded this year, 25.6% of the pre-Trump average. source: grant-witness.us/funding_curv...
A plot showing the number of grants awarded by the geoscience directorate for the federal fiscal years of 2021 through 2026. Pre-Trump numbers are all roughly the same, 2025 is about half of the pre-Trump average and this year is consistently a quarter of the pre-Trump average. In prior years new grants were rapidly awarded between July and mid-August before basically stopping around late August. Not yet clear if this year's curve will follow a similar pattern.

PhD Grants Awarded to Twenty-Four Teachers
Twenty-four teachers have received a grant to work on their PhD. The Ministry of Education is funding this program with 11 million euros each year until 2027. This initiative helps teachers study important topics while keeping their jobs in schools. It aims to build a stronger link between schools and universities. The chosen research topics cover many different fields. Some projects look at how to support new nurses, while others study how teachers handle neutrality in the classroom. One teacher is also looking into how people react to child abuse. All teachers will spend the next five years completing their doctoral research projects.

2/ Precarity in research: Lack of predictability, security & stability. 🫣 Pathways for many early career researchers are far from linear or secure. 🤲 Dr Oluwasuen shared what is happening in the sector for supporting postdoctoral talent. /end
Talk title: Leading from the Wobbly End: Early career researchers leading through precarity

Talk abstract:
Dr Oluwaseun is Lecturer in Public Health within HIP-R, working on ethnic health inequities in maternal, neonatal and child health using large linked datasets. She came to this role via an NIHR SPHR Post-doctoral Launching Fellowship and an earlier postdoc at Liverpool, a DPhil at Oxford, and several years at Public Health England — a path that, like many ECRs', was far from linear or secure. That experience of leading through precarity is what this talk grew out of, and what took her to a UKRI/C-DICE event on supporting postdoctoral talent in York last November. She will share what is happening in the sector and how we can contextualise for our setting.
